HP DesignJet T520 36-in Printer

I have an HP T520 Designjet that is displaying an error 87.10

This is an error related to the encoder strip, which is the mylar strip that is printed with a grid that a sensor in the printhead carriage reads as it moves back and forth. Open the top lid and you will see it just above the chrome carriage rod that runs the width of the printer. If it is damaged or missing it will need to be replaced (Part number for 36" printer is CQ890-67004)

If it is intact and present you can try cleaning. Get a soft, lint free cloth and dampen with water and apply a couple of drops of alcohol. (very sparing amount). Clean the strip by gently running the cloth over plastic strip (be careful, the bottom half of the strip is thin steel and can easily cut you. Clean the strip until you find no more ink on the cloth. Allow to dry and then power the printer off then on to clear the error and see if the printer will come to ready.
