Do a search on google for the service manual.  There's a sensor on the left side of the carriage that reads the marks on the new maintenance cartridge.  If it's dirty clean it and test.  A very fine ink spray get's all over the lense.  May have to replace it.  That's what I had to do on a Z6200 that had the same problem.

Will post more later when time allows.  It's an easy fix.

Here's a link to the service manual:

Chapter 1, page 10 covers the line sensor and shows a link about how to remove and clean/replace.

The line sensor has to be able to read the markings on the top of the maintenance cartridge.

Thank you for the reply but the catridge is brand new and the white sensor between the 2nd and 3rd head is crystal clean.

If you check page 379 in the Service Manual they show a picture of the line sensor and it's location.  Also instructions on how to remove it for cleaning.  It resides on the right hand side of the carriage, underneath the perforated tin cover.  (You might have to remove the entire right hand side cover for better access.  Or move the carriage to the center of the printer and unplug it.)  When you load paper the printer checks for the edge of the paper by shining a light on the paper.  So you should be able to see this light when you load a roll.  But the line sensor has two lights on it and one of them might be obscured with ink residue.  Or you might have to replace it.  They're very inexpensive and easy to find brand new on Ebay.

When you load a new maint. cartridge the printer should mark the top of the cartridge with ink colors, then the line sensor is used to read those colors.  Do you see any ink colors on top of the new maint. cartridge?  If it's perfectly clean then there might be a different problem.  Any other error codes?  Have you replaced anything else besides the maint. cartridge?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the sensor you're referring to between the printheads.  Can you find a page reference in the Service Manual?  Maybe I'm missing something.
