Hi @hagar63,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the display on your HP Officejet Pro 9720e is very dim, it can make it difficult to navigate the printer’s settings and functions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

1. Check Brightness Settings

  • Access Settings: Navigate to the printer’s control panel and look for display or screen settings. Some printers allow you to adjust the brightness of the display.
  • Adjust Brightness: If there is an option to adjust the brightness, increase it to see if it improves the visibility of the display.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve display issues by resetting the printer’s internal components.

3. Inspect Power Supply

  • Check Connection: Ensure that the power cable is securely connected to both the printer and the power outlet.
  • Try a Different Outlet: Plug the printer into a different power outlet to rule out any issues with the current outlet.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for Updates: Visit HP’s website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your Officejet Pro 9720e. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve display issues.
  • Follow Instructions: Download and install any available updates according to the instructions provided on the HP website.

5. Clean the Display

  • Gently Clean: Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or a screen cleaner to gently clean the display. Avoid using harsh chemicals or excessive moisture.

6. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Inspect Cables and Connectors: Ensure that all internal cables and connectors related to the display are securely connected. This may require opening the printer, so consult your printer’s manual or a professional if you’re not comfortable doing this yourself.
  • Look for Signs of Damage: Check for any visible signs of damage to the display or internal components.

7. Perform a Factory Reset

  • Factory Reset: As a last resort, perform a factory reset on the printer. This will restore default settings and might resolve display issues. Refer to your printer’s manual for specific instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for the reply. I feel a bit of a dope here because the problem was all down to me not having the printer on a high enough table! I only discovered this when I adjusted the screens orientation/ angle. As soon as I did that the icon colours became normal. I then placed the printer at just below eye level and again, normal coloured icons. My fault.

Thanks anyway for your help. I did originally do all your suggestions.

Cheers.
