Does the power supply fan (cooling fan) run all the time?

This looks like a fairly standard PC type power supply and I believe those fans on your PC run all the itme!

My 500 power supply fan never runs!  Is this a problem?  FYI the other fan, on the electronis runs when plotting, but not full time!

:Crying:

You know one thing about these fans that you find in pc's and in laserjet printers is that one of the lines on the fan lets the machine know that the fan is spinning.

If you look through the service manual for the machine I bet you'll find error codes that happen when fans don't turn if they are supposed to.

I wouldn't worry about the fan if you're not getting an error code.

Hi,  Thanks for contactinf with HP Support Forum.

That cooling fan run when required or becomes any over heat in the main PCA/Elcetronic Module. So don't worry, while you send a job to the printer, automatically run the FAN.

Please accept my solution ang give thumbs kudos.

Thanks for the answer!  Two fans, the one on top of the electronics module, does run when plotting, it does not run when the plotter is idle, so this seems normal.

The 2nd fan is the fan built into the power supply itself, located below the electronics module, facing to the back of the plotter.  It appears to be very similar to a fan in a computer  power supply.  That fan does not run at all, never has!

The question is should that fan (the one in the power supply) ever run?  should it run always or under what circumstances should it run?

There are many of these power supplys for sale on EBay, that tells me that they do fail?
