An 86 error indicates a problem moving the carriage. To troubleshoot try the following:

First power off the printer. Open the window and check the rubber belt that drives the carriage. Look in particular at the left end of the carriage, use a flashlight. Make sure the are no threads, tears or other damage to the belt. The belt should have reasonable tension on it. If not then either belt has failed or possibly the retainer that holds the belt to the carriage has broken. If the cartridge is not parked at the right end, try to move the carriage to the left. It should move smoothly. If it moves and the belt looks good, next you need to check the encoder strip. This is the plastic strip runs the width of the carriage. If it is in one piece and not sagging, try cleaning the strip with a water dampened lint free soft cloth. Wipe gently until cloth no longer comes away with ink stains. GENTLE is key, there is a micro-grid printed on that strip that a sensor in the carriage reads to determine where the carriage is.
