RESOLVED
Hopefully this is my last post on this issue. I replaced the printhead and the printer accepted the new printhead.
**Fun Fact**
Although my printer is set to auto-firmware updates, I see a firmware update was posted online days before I ran into this problem. One of the fixes is to mitigate printhead rejection! The timing isn't ideal but I appreciate that HP provides firmware updates to these costly units so thank you, HP. I have installed the firmware update manually (after already installing the new printhead). Fingers crossed!
I appreciate many users took the time to read my post: Thank you for reading even if no comments were forthcoming. That can happen.
Best wishes,
=======================
Hi! This is my 3rd Designjet. The original warranty on this unit ended a few months ago. I am just finishing the introductory ink cartridges so, to be sure, the unit has not seen much use. (The unit sat unused in its shipping crate for over a year before it was finally put into production.) I need help!
The T1700 has 3 printheads with 2 colours assigned to each printhead. I was printing an image when the printer stopped printing and told me an ink cartridge needed replacing so I replaced my photo-black ink cartridge (yes, ink cartridge). As soon as I closed the door and the LCD display refreshed, it reported the related gray/photo-black printhead requires reseating. To be clear, I had not touched the print heads.
I have followed the procedures to re-seat which essentially is the same as replacing a printhead. I have tried it many times to no avail including powering off/ powering on, unplugging/replugging, wiping the electrical contacts on the printhead (even with alcohol, not water) with a lint free cloth. No change in status. When I reinsert the printhead, the display shows it is recognized; when the printer moves to the carriage, the message about needing to reseat the cartridge reappears. It's an endless loop.
The printheads in this printer have only had about 100ml of ink pass through them it so it's not a wear or age issue. When the carriage parks, I noticed that the printhead's history and serial number are blank. I had read elsewhere that removing/replacing an adjacent printhead may help (random wishful thinking, I feel now): I did that with the other two print heads, in fact, and not only did nothing change but because the 1st printhead is in an error state, the printer cannot complete a priming cycle to complete their reinstallation (so they show errors now, too).
Wondering if low ink was a concern -- the introductory cartridges are low -- I replaced all of the ink cartridges with new HP cartridges. That also didn't help. I should also add that the printer firmware is up to date.
Any other input that might help me resolve this will be appreciated. Thank you.
Update: Since posting originally, I have had a chat session with HP support: The suggestion is to replace the printhead which I have ordered. I will update here how that goes once it arrives.
