HP DesignJet T120 24-in Printer

Printer is currently useless. Any help will be much appreciated.

This started with an empty cartridge. So i replaced it. Got defective/damaged cartridge error. Weird. So I have now removed all cartridges and replaced them. And I have tried new cartridges. The Yellow cartridge is defective no matter what. Apparently this is a problem with the firmware. So I've been trying to update the firmware.

None of the firmware update methods are working for our Designjet T120 plotter. It needs the update so it will accept new ink cartridges and we can use the printer.

I've tried many times to update the firmware using the DesignJet Utility. It says that it has uploaded the firmware to the printer and then printer will restart to finish installing it but it never restarts. I have powered off and on the printer and unplugged it. Still the firmware is NOT updated.  Printer is connected to our network via a cable, not wirelessly.

I've tried updating via the web interface but Web Services isn't enabled and it gets stuck forever when trying to register/enable it.

What else can I try?

Current firmware version is: AXP2CN1437AR

The version available to download is: AXP2CN2022AR

Product number: CQ891A

Serial Number  [personal info removed]

I cannot print in black and white or grayscale either.  Very frustrating. Is there a way to get the T120 to print in B&W with a bad color ink cartridge? That would be something at least temporarily.

Please help!

Thank you in advance -

Valerie

I have the exact same problem with the T520, can't get it to upload the firmware. Did you ever get it figured out?

No, I never got the firmware updated.

However,  I replaced the printhead and that solved the problem. For the T120, the printhead is available from hp.com and amazon.  The T120 printhead replacement kit is C1Q10A and it came with new starter ink cartridges, which was nice. Printhead says it works for other large format printers too.

The cartridge was not defective once we replaced the printhead.

Good luck!

Valerie

Ok, that makes sense. After I sent that message, I was looking closer at the cartridge and realized there is black ink on it. I'll look into a replacement print head.

thanks!

Forgot to add, I did get that HP E-connect thing to start working. In your network settings, make sure you have both DNS and WINS information added.  I haven't tried that yet to upgrade firmware, but at least it's now connected.

Fyi, instructions to replace the printhead are in the user's manual.
