On a T930 during paper calibration I am getting: “diagnostic result: fail” right after the attempt to calibrate the analog encoder before printing calibration pattern. Transmission motor passes paper drive test. At least states that it passes. It shows: OK. And PWM readings/figures appear within specs.
I get no SEs. I have the latest FW. (Thinking of resetting EEROM just for something to try.)
I have no problem in the normal course of printing, only during the "paper calibration".
I am going to take a look at the sensor and disk and try to determine whether there is a problem--probably clean disk if necessary and sensor.
I assume the progression is probably: replace encoder disk and encoder sensor, and if that does not remedy the problem, then replace main pca.
....Does anyone know?: are those encoder disks interchangeable with say T1100-T1300 encoder disks? Is the media drive transmission centering/adjusting tool interchangeable with the T1100-T1300 tool? I have those for T1100-T1300, etc. models.
....well, someone put in 3rd party matte black ink. Does that affect the paper calibration somehow? Maybe it detects 3rd party matte black and will not perform calibration kind of like it will not calibrate without some type of photo paper. Don't really know. I think it uses matte black for the printing related to calibration. (I might have an OEM matte black that I can install.)
Has anyone experienced this? If so, what was the solution?

I continue to get “diagnostic result: fail” in the service menu > service calibrations > paper advance calibration. I ASSUME the analog encoder is not properly calibrating.
But in “main menu” > print quality maintenance > paper advance calibration, it seems to successfully calibrate paper advance. But for the paper under print quality maintenance > calibration status then under “paper advance calibration”, it states “unknown”. I don’t understand that. MAYBE it again has something to do with the 3rd party matte black ink. I have no idea. I assume the paper advance is being calibrated although it shows “unknown” as the paper advance calibration status of the specific paper.

according to the service manual for the t1200 and the T795 and T1100, the encoder disk and sensor are the same part number.

Repairatrooper: So you are saying for the t1200 and the T795 and T1100, the encoder disk and sensor are the same part number as for the T930 or the same part number among those 3 units: T1200, T795, & T1100?
(BTW, is it possible that the T930 will not paper advance calibrate because the matte black ink is 3rd party ink? I have no real idea about this possibility. ....when I try to paper advance calibrate I get "result or status (I forget exact word): unknown")

Sorry I do not know if non-HP inks will affect the calibration. I guess it is possible if the ink has a different level of light absorption that the sensor may not read the ink. You should also make sure that the line sensor on the carriage is clean. If you can print a head alignment I would think that there is no problem with the ink.

FWIW, I had the T930 perform the "line sensor calibration" as recommended by a tech in copytechnet.com. It was successful. After that I had it perform the "paper advance calibration" with a resulting status for the paper of: paper advance calibration: OK, as opposed to previously having been "unknown".
