When I try to calibrate the printheads I get an error message "calibration cancelled due to scanning problems". yellows and blues wont print properly. I have replaced all the ink. I am hesitant to replace printheads because a) theyre expensive after just dropping $900 on all the inks b) im not seeing definite resolution from people after replacing the printheads. Any ideas?

If you run a printhead test, are there visible dropouts in the yellow and cyan? If yes, if running a printhead maintenance does not clear the problem, you likely are stuck replacing them as the calibration routine will error out if there are more clogged elements than it can properly compensate for. What is the status of the printheads? Have they been used alot? Are they out of warranty? It is also possible that the line sensor, which is mounted on the side of the carriage, is dirty and needs to be cleaned.

If replacing the printheads that aren't putting out ink doesn't help, you might want to remove and clean the line sensor. It's fairly easy to remove for cleaning and, if needed, cheaper to replace than all the printheads. Easily available new. It's the part that does the scanning and can cause the error you're having if it's dirty or defective. But if the print shows some colors missing, like Repairatrooper suggests, you're going to need to replace those printheads. You can try cleaning them by setting them in a dish very warm water, almost hot, to let them soak. I usually put a paper towel in a bowl and put with just enough water in to soak the paper towel. Leave them in there for 30 or so minutes. Remove them and GENTLY set them on a coffee filter and lightly wipe them. You should see lines of ink if they're unplugged. Repeat the process if needed. If you don't see good, strong lines of ink, you'll need to replace the printhead.
Don't bother buying remanufactured printheads. They seldom work.
Part number for the line sensor from the service manual is Q5669-60684. If you google that part number it will bring you up several vendors. It seems to be a bit more expensive than most line sensors but it maybe because it has the spectrophotomer built into it. I had this same problem on a Z3200 and ended up replacing the part.
There are service manuals available on the net that you can download that will show you exactly how to do it. Here's a link to one from LPS Computers (no affiliation):
