Hi @maria_koutsiouk,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

For Error Code 0009-0003 on the HP DesignJet T830 24-in Multifunction Printer, this is a scanner-related error. HP recommends restarting the printer first, as the error can clear after the scanner initializes again.

Please try the following:

  1. Turn off the printer using the Power button.
  2. Once the printer is completely off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  3. Wait for a few moments.
  4. Reconnect the power cord.
  5. Turn the printer back on and allow it to complete the startup process.
  6. Once the printer is ready, check whether Error 0009-0003 has cleared.
  7. Try the scanner again to confirm whether it is working normally.

If the error returns after restarting the printer, please let us know. At that point, the scanner initialization is still reporting a problem, and we can determine the appropriate next step.

If the error is currently displayed on the front panel, you can also upload a clear photo of the message so we can verify exactly what the printer is reporting.

Dear HP Support Team,

I would like to provide you with a detailed history of the issues I have experienced with my HP DesignJet T830 and request your assistance in evaluating the current situation.

The printer is approximately 6 years old and, until recently, was operating normally.

Since December, several issues have occurred. Initially, the problem was related to the paper sensor. The machine was taken to a service provider, where a repair/service was carried out at a cost of €160. However, approximately one week after receiving the machine back, the same issue reappeared.

Following a telephone conversation with the service provider, I was advised to replace the printhead. The printhead was subsequently replaced at a cost of approximately €500. Although I understand that the printhead can be considered a consumable component and that replacement may be expected after several years of use, the paper sensor issue was not permanently resolved.

Since then, there have also been occasions when I had to repeat the printhead replacement/installation procedure in order for the printer to operate.

Despite these issues, the HP DesignJet T830 continued to function and was being used normally until recently.

A new and more serious problem has now appeared. Upon startup, the printer immediately displays Error 0009-0003. The machine does not complete its startup process and no normal initialization movement appears to take place.

Interestingly, when switching the printer off, certain mechanical operations are performed: the carriage moves, the roll is centered and cut, but the carriage does not return to its normal parking position on the right and remains approximately in the middle.

The service provider has informed me that Error 0009-0003 is related to communication between the scanner and an electronic board, and that this is a separate issue from the paper sensor problem.

The estimated cost provided to me for resolving Error 0009-0003 is €368 + VAT. In addition, I was informed of a further cost of €194 + VAT for the paper sensor issue, plus €80 + VAT for labor.

I have also contacted HP Support by telephone and provided the full history described above. During the call, a reset/factory reset procedure was performed, but the problem was not resolved and Error 0009-0003 continues to appear.

In addition, I have been informed by another experienced technician, who also contacted HP regarding this issue, that such a failure would not normally be expected for a machine of this age.

Considering that significant amounts have already been spent on servicing and replacing components, while the original issue was not permanently resolved, and that a new and potentially serious error has now appeared, I would appreciate HP's official technical opinion regarding the following:

What are the possible causes of Error 0009-0003?

Is this type of failure considered normal or expected for an HP DesignJet T830 that is approximately 6 years old?

Is there any known technical issue, service advisory, or recommended procedure from HP regarding this specific error?

Based on the machine's repair history and current condition, would HP consider repair to be a reasonable solution, or should another solution be considered?

Given the history of repeated issues and the significant repair costs already incurred, is there any possibility of technical assistance, goodwill support, or another form of support from HP?

I would greatly appreciate a detailed technical assessment before proceeding with any further costly repairs.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Kind regards,Maria

Hi @maria_koutsiouk,

Thank you for providing such a detailed history of your HP DesignJet T830 and the repairs already carried out. I understand your concern, particularly given the previous expenditure and the fact that the printer is now stopping during startup with Error 0009-0003.

As an HP Community response, I would not want to speculate about the exact failed component or advise you to proceed with a €368 + VAT repair based only on the error code.

Error 0009-0003 is a technical hardware-related startup error, and determining the exact cause can require advanced diagnostics of the scanner, scanner communication, and associated electronics. A factory reset would not necessarily resolve a hardware communication failure, so the fact that the reset did not clear the error does not by itself identify which component has failed.

Regarding your questions

  • The error should be properly diagnosed before replacing additional parts.
  • A six-year-old DesignJet can develop component failures due to normal wear and age, but the age of the printer alone does not establish that 0009-0003 is an expected or normal failure.
  • The previous paper-sensor issue and the current 0009-0003 error should be diagnosed separately unless HP's technical team determines that there is a common underlying cause.
  • Given the repair history and the costs already incurred, I would not recommend authorizing another paid repair until the current error has been technically assessed.

Recommended next step
Because you have already contacted HP by telephone and completed a factory reset without resolving Error 0009-0003, I strongly recommend contacting HP Commercial/DesignJet Phone Support directly.

The Commercial/DesignJet team has access to more advanced technical support and service information than is available through the HP Community. They can review the printer's history, determine the appropriate diagnostic procedure for 0009-0003, and advise whether repair is technically and economically reasonable.
