HP DesignJet T520 36-in Printer

I have a screen that says possible printhead problem.

I have replaced printhead and installed new ink. I have rebooted machine 5x and cannot get machine to function

Any ideas on how to get this to work?

Hello @Brutusthedog, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Since you have already replaced the printhead, installed new ink cartridges, and restarted the HP DesignJet T520 several times, the next step is to verify that the new printhead and cartridges are being detected correctly.

Try these steps in order.

1. Power cycle the printer

  1. Turn the printer off from the control panel.
  2. Turn it back on and wait for the control‑panel message.
  3. If it still shows a printhead problem, continue.

2. Reseat the printhead

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Open the front door and then the printhead access door.
  3. Push down to open the printhead latch.
  4. Carefully remove the printhead from the carriage.
  5. Check that there is no plug or protective tape left on top of the printhead or on the printhead contacts. If present, remove it.
  6. Slide the printhead back into the same slot until it clicks into place.
  7. Close the printhead latch firmly.
  8. Close the printhead access door and front door.
  9. Check whether the error clears.

3. Clean the printhead and printer contacts

If the error persists:

  1. With the printer on, open the front door and printhead access door again.
  2. Open the printhead latch and remove the indicated printhead.
  3. Hold the printhead by its sides and locate the gold-colored electrical contacts.
  4. Gently wipe only the contacts with a dry swab or lint‑free cloth.
  5. Inside the printer, locate the matching gold-colored contacts and gently wipe them as well.
  6. Reinstall the printhead, close the latch, then close all doors.
  7. Turn the printer off, then on again, and check the display.

Do not touch the nozzles or smear ink on the contacts and avoid leaving the printhead out of the printer for more than about 30 minutes.

4. If the problem remains

If the control panel still reports a printhead problem after reseating and cleaning:

  • Try a new printhead (if the current one might be defective).
  • If a new printhead does not resolve it, you need to contact HP support for further assistance, as the issue may be with the carriage or electronics.

Have a great day!
