HP 24ea monitor. Change from VGA to HDMI, no sound

I have an HP Pavilion 500-366na desktop and an HP 24ea 23.8-inch IPS display. I am running an up-to-date version of Windows 10 - Version 2004 Build 19041.572.

Until now I have connected the monitor to the system using a VGA and an audio cable. Perhaps foolishly, I believed that I would get better video by using an HDMI cable instead of VGA. My desktop has a DVI-D rather than HDMI output, so I bought a converter and connected the HDMI cable. The monitor displays video (though whether I can detect an improvement on the VGA cable is another matter), but there is no sound. I have installed a new driver for the monitor, and checked that the sound driver is up to date, but still no joy. From the monitor user guide, I have both HDMI and audio cables connected. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have been through the HP Audio Check and used the Virtual Assistant up to the point of reconfiguring the Bios, which I would prefer to avoid. None of the checks discovered any problems but there remained no sound.

Replacing the HDMI cable with the  VGA one restored the sound, so I guess I will have to forgo improved graphics and stick with VGA.
