Windows 10, Ver. 22H2.

Was working great for years but the Line In option has not worked in the past few days. I have been using it to encode analog tapes.

  • The tape machine is fine. The VU meters are activated and I can hear the audio through the headphones connected directly to the tape deck
  • However, the VU meters within the software do not activate and sound does not come through the speakers
  • I can hear audio from music files on my PC and also can hear YouTube video
  • As per the screenshot, the Line In is activated, but the VU meter to the right of it does not register sound, as it used to do
  • So, I connected a Philips external sound card, which you can see in the screenshot, which works great, as it used to, when bypassing the Line In. But, if I switch to the native Line In, no sound.

I tried to run the HP hardware diagnostics tool which does not work, either. When I launch it, it flashes for a second and disappears. No further trace of anything happening. So, I am suspecting the onboard audio device. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I failed IT 101! There were a few other cables hanging free behind the machine and the wrong cable was plugged in. Not sure who did that as nobody else uses my PC! Sorry, folks - I am redfaced. Now that I have spent the better part of a few days on this, it is punishment enough for me!
