I just spent over an hour on the phone with HP tech support.  My computer is about a month old, so my situation may differ from others.

The short story: They couldn't fix it.

The long story, which differs from what others have said:  The driver version on my computer is 10.0.15063.502, which I believe came with the  Windows 15063.502 update to Windows build 1703 (AKA Creators Update), dated August 1.  HP's latest driver available for download is 8.65.186.53 Rev.A, released on May 24.  No matter what we did, we could not dislodge the MS drivers from the system, Windows always overrode the HP driver after we installed it.  I don't remember there the Roll Back Driver option ever being enabled.

The technician proposed either reverting to an earlier restore point, but I think I've always had the problem, or doing a complete wipe and reinstall.  My guess is that if I do either, Windows Update will just reinstall the bad driver when it realizes that my OS is out of date.  It's definitely not worth risking a reinstall.

I've been told that my situation will be reviewed, but there are no other possible resolutions at this time.  So my conlculsion is that I can either wait and see if HP or Microsoft come up with a new driver, or I can buy a sound card.

Sound card recommendations would be appreciated....

Hmm, I´m running Win10 build 1703 and i have no issues choosing the Microsoft OS build-in driver instead of the vender specific driver.

To SuperRobert: What version of the Windows sound drivers are you running?  Do they give acceptable sound good?

My problem seems to be the inverse of that described:  Windows is forcing me to run their driver (version 10.0.15063.502 dated 7/27/2017), and it still gives tinny sound. I note that when I click on Driver Details in the Speakers Properties dialog, I get a message saying "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device", so I guess that this is truly baked into the OS.

BTW, I'm comparing the sound on the new EliteDesk with a seven-year-old Dell XPS with motherboard-based sound and Realtek drivers.

I decided to buy a sound card (ASUS Xonar DGX).

SuperRobert; det ser godt nok Dansk ud! ... thanks for supplying the device driver snippets; my problem is that after a reboot the Conexant drivers are loaded back and sound is messed up. Only option to avoid that is to turn off online driver updates altogether for all drivers so I really don't want to do that. Do you have any other clues you can add please? ...  Mange tak! ..

Har du prøvet med "roll back" driver på enheden? Det har jeg gjort på en enkelt maskine og så blev jeg spurgt om hvorfor - og her valgte jeg fordi den "gamle" driver virkede bedre - alt den indbyggede native windows driver.

Have you tried the "roll back" driver on the device? I have done that on a single machine and I was asked why - and here I chose because the "old" driver worked better - all the native native windows operate.

Men ellers har det virket fint på 10 maskiner med at bruge Windows egen driver.

I don't know if this will help, but I received an HP Critical Update alert for the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Tower PC Conexant High Definition Audio Driver (ver 8.65.225.0 Rev.A) email.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet.  It's not on the driver download site and the link I have states that it is currently unable to access the system at this time, please check back shortly.

We are having the same problem with our HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF computers.  Sound is terrible.  Cannot find a newer driver to fix this issue.
