I have a nearly-new all in one which has never had it's headphone jack used until last night.

It doesn't recognize either of my headphones being inserted. I've reinstalled drivers but don't get anything. It simply shows as nothing in the jack.

How do I get it to recognize headphones are in, or do I need to use a specific kind of headphone for it to pick up? The kind I'm using are just the basic type you'd use on an MP3 player, no microphone or anything. I know these 2 headphones work elsewhere, just not on this PC.

Any ideas?

Hi @celticveil,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP All-In-One Desktop PC 24's headphone jack isn't recognizing when you insert a plug, there could be a few reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the problem:

Check the Basics:

  • Make sure you're inserting the headphone plug into the correct jack on the computer.
  • Ensure that the headphone plug is inserted all the way into the jack.

Restart Your Computer:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve hardware recognition issues.

Test with Different Headphones:

  • Try using different headphones or earphones to check if the problem lies with the headphones themselves.

Check Audio Settings:

  • Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar (usually located on the bottom right of the screen) and select "Open Sound settings."
  • Under the "Output" section, make sure the correct output device is selected.

Check Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can cause issues. To update drivers:
    • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
    • Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section, right-click on your audio device, and choose "Update driver."

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Sometimes, Windows updates can include important driver updates. Make sure your system is up to date.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • There might be physical issues with the headphone jack itself. If none of the above steps work, you might need to contact HP support or a professional technician to inspect and potentially repair the hardware.

Driver Reinstallation:

  • If updating the drivers doesn't help, you can try uninstalling the audio drivers and then restarting your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.

Check Default Playback Device:

  • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select "Sounds."
  • In the "Playback" tab, ensure that the correct playback device is set as the default.

System Restore:

  • If the issue started recently, you could try restoring your system to a point before the issue began.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Sometimes, third-party audio-related software can interfere with the headphone jack. Try disabling or uninstalling such software if you have any.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you!

I'm not seeing the 'kudos/thumbs up' on the bottom right. I did select 'accepted solution'. The jack required some extra force to get it seated properly. I don't know if this is normal for HP jack inputs, but it's working now.
