Microsoft Windows 11

My mic suddenly stopped working within the last couple of weeks. I've run all of the diagnostic test and tried all the fixes. It's not muted, etc. But when I run the audio test, it says "Result: 0% of total volume".  Both speaker and mic device listed is Realtek Audio. Under microphone, it doesn't specifically say 'microphone'.  All updates are up to date. Help!

Hi @blisscreative,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the microphone.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion x360 14 Convertible PC 14m-dy1000 is having issues with the microphone, where it isn't picking up any sound even though you've tried various diagnostic tests and updates. Since the issue persists, let’s go through some focused troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the problem.

Step 1: Check Microphone Settings in Sound Control Panel

Open Sound Settings:

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sounds or Open Sound settings.
  • In the Sound settings, under Input, make sure the correct microphone is selected (usually listed as Realtek Audio or Microphone Array).

Check Microphone Properties:

  • Click Device properties under the Input section, then click Additional device properties.
  • Go to the Levels tab and ensure the microphone is not muted and that the volume is set to 100%.

Set the Correct Input Device:

  • Ensure that the correct microphone (e.g., Realtek Audio or Internal Microphone) is set as the default device under the Recording tab in the Sound control panel.
  • Right-click on the desired microphone, select Set as Default Device, and click Apply.

Step 2: Check Privacy Settings for Microphone Access

  1. Review Microphone Privacy Settings:
    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
    • Ensure that Microphone access for this device is turned On.
    • Make sure Allow apps to access your microphone is turned On.
    • Scroll down and check if the specific apps you use are allowed to access the microphone.

Step 3: Run the Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Run the Built-in Audio Troubleshooter:
    • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Find Recording Audio and click Run.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows detect and fix any microphone issues.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @blisscreative,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Step 4: Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

Update Audio Drivers:

  • Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager).
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click on Realtek Audio and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers and let Windows find any available updates.

Reinstall Audio Drivers:

  • If updating doesn’t work, right-click on Realtek Audio in Device Manager and select Uninstall device.
  • Check the option Delete the driver software for this device, and then click Uninstall.
  • Restart your laptop, and Windows should automatically reinstall the audio driver. Alternatively, download the latest driver from the HP support website.

Step 5: Check for Hardware Issues

Inspect the Microphone Array:

  • If your laptop has an internal microphone array, make sure there’s no obstruction or damage near the microphone area.
  • Try using an external microphone or headset to see if it works correctly. This can help determine if the internal microphone is faulty.

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 during startup to enter the BIOS setup.
  • In the BIOS, ensure that the internal microphone is enabled (if applicable).

Step 6: Test in Safe Mode or with a Different User Account

Test in Safe Mode:

  • Restart your laptop in Safe Mode and test the microphone functionality to rule out any software conflicts.
  • If the microphone works in Safe Mode, it may indicate a conflict with third-party software or drivers.

Test with a Different User Account:

  • Create a new local user account on your laptop and log in with it to check if the microphone works. This can help identify if the issue is related to user-specific settings.

Step 7: Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts

Disable Audio Enhancements:

  • Go to Sound settings > Device properties > Additional device properties.
  • In the Enhancements tab, check Disable all enhancements and click Apply.

Check for Third-Party Audio Software:

  • Look for any third-party audio software (like Nahimic, Realtek Audio Console, or others) that may have control over the microphone settings and adjust accordingly.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, there could be a deeper hardware fault with the microphone or a need for repair. If necessary, consider contacting HP phone support for service.
