I keep getting the noise the PC makes when plugging in a device.  The up plug in noise and then the down unplug sound.  Nothing is being added or taken out of the system.  I also do not see anything new coming up when it makes the sound.  What is up with this phantom notification?

Assuming you are speaking about the USB ports making that plug and unplug sound.  If there is something actually plugged in, then it might be cycling or a bad cord.  If there is nothing plugged in, then ???

Since the actual model number is not posted, Assuming this to be a desktop where the mouse and keyboard are typically USB.

So perhaps it is one or the other with a problem.

What is connected to your USB ports:

  • web-camera
  • keyboard (external or in a notebook computer) since it might be 'talking" through an internal USB interface
  • mouse
  • USB memory-stick
  • printer
  • integrated touchpad (for a notebook computer)

My suggestion is to wiggle each of the cables for each of the devices, near to where the cable connects to a USB port, to see if you can induce the noise. Also, for a USB mouse, wiggle the cable that vanishes inside the mouse.  Good luck!

Or, disconnect everything, except the mouse, to see if the noise stops, or if moving the mouse triggers the noise.  A mouse is very sensitive. Even changing the pressure of a finger on the mouse can "move" the mouse.  Slowly, add one device, and listen.

Maybe just try this, it could directly indicate what is connected / disconnected
