Hi @Drive4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your speakers are connected but do not appear in the list of playback devices, we'll first want to determine whether this is a Windows, driver, or hardware detection issue.

Could you please let us know:

  • The exact HP computer model
  • Are these external speakers (USB, 3.5 mm audio jack, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc.) or the laptop's built-in speakers?
  • Which version of Windows are you using (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?

In the meantime, please try the following:
1. Check the Playback Devices List

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  2. Select Sound Settings
  3. Under Output, check whether your speakers appear in the list.
  4. If available, select them as the default output device.

2. Run the Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
  2. Run the Playing Audio troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the on-screen recommendations.

3. Check Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager
  2. Expand Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers
  3. Look for any devices with a yellow warning icon.
  4. If you find one, please let us know the device name.

4. Restart the Audio Driver

  1. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click your audio device (such as Realtek Audio).
  3. Select Disable device, then Enable device again.
  4. Test the audio.

If the speakers still do not appear, please provide:

  • The HP model number.
  • The type of speakers you are using.
  • A screenshot of the Sound Output list, if possible.

We'll be happy to continue troubleshooting with you and help get the audio working again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.

Hi @Drive4,

We're happy to help with your audio issue.

To make sure we provide the correct troubleshooting steps, could you please confirm if you're reaching out for technical assistance with an HP computer?

If so, we'll need the exact HP product model to provide model-specific guidance. You can usually find it on a label on the bottom of the laptop, on the back of a desktop, or by pressing Fn + Esc (on most HP notebooks), which opens the HP System Information window.

Additionally, could you let us know:

  • Are you referring to the built-in speakers of the HP computer, or are these external speakers connected to the PC?
  • If they are external, how are they connected (3.5 mm audio jack, USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc.)?

Please note that you've reached the HP Support Community, which is a community support forum and not a live chat service. We do our best to respond to every customer as early as possible and appreciate your patience while we review your post.

Once you share the HP product details and the information above, we'll be happy to continue assisting you.
