I have an HP Touchsmart 320 PC, that is about 10-12 years old. It is both the pc and the monitor? I stored it away for a year, plugged it back in and fired it back up. No updates or anything. Everything worked great. Except the sound. In the lower right hand corner in the task/tool bar the sound icon has a small red circle with a white x going through it. The built in speakers don't work, nor do headphones. The PC has the current windows updates installed and the problem still persists. The Audio Driver won't update. After restarting the PC the Audio Driver in Device Management disappears, however, under other devices folder (It's drop down menu is automatically opened) reads "Audio Device on High Definition Auto Bus" with a small exclamation point near it's symbol. After trying to update said device it says "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them. IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. A device attached to the system is not functioning. " I've tried searching for driver updates and such on HP's website but nothing is available. I have done everything the HP Virtual Agent has directed me to do. Nothing has worked. I know it's an old PC but everything else works flawlessly and runs exceptionally well. If anyone has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate your input.

I get the same error message after updating my HP TouchSmart 610 to Windows 10 (1909). I tried every suggestion given, even downloading the drivers from the HP website. By the way, these drivers are 8 years old! These drivers need to be updated! The suggestion in this thread does not work either. I have back out the Windows1909 build a number of times to an earlier build and the sound goes back to working perfectly. I'm forced to update to the Windows 10 (1909) build because they will not service the earlier windows builds anymore. So there is a clear incompatibility problem between "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC" and the Windows 10 upgrade (1909) build. This needs to be investigated by "software developers", or I and many of your other customers will not be able to use their beats audio speakers on these HP computers. Do not recommend the regular troubleshooting steps because they are just a waste of time and will not work. This is something new for older PCs having to update to build 1909.
