Does anyone know if HP has a BIOS update out to support a processor upgrade to KabyLake for this desktop?
This desktop has the Thimphu motherboard, and on the motherboard's support page, it says that it supports Kaby Lake cpus.
Today (Sept 20, 2017), on the support page for the Envy 750-175 (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-750-100-desktop-pc-series/8499646/model/890...), I saw they had released a new BIOS version: A0.57 Rev.A (with a release date of Aug 17, 2017), so I excitedly updated the BIOS & plopped in an i7-7700k, and no dice!
The HP Support Assistant app is pretty much useless-- recommends software updates that are for the wrong motherboard, etc.
It has been a while since Kaby Lake came out, the HP page for the Thimphu motherboard says it supports Kaby Lake, but theres no BIOS update

There is no support for KabyLake for your system board.

Only SkyLake.

No, this information is correct. Your PC is shiped with Thimphu, not Thimphu-K motherboard:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04829277
So it's Skylake-only compatible.

Sorry if I come off as a being especially disagreeable, but on this page:
support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05369438
- HP name: Thimphu-K
- SSID: 2B4B
So both Thimphu-K and Thimphu motherboards have the same SSID, it seems.
I can't make out any difference between the motherboard pictures on the pages for the 2 motherboards.
HP seems to go by classifying BIOS applicability based upon the motherboard SSID, so its not unreasonable for a customer to believe that a system with a motherboard whose SSID is 2B4B can be upgraded to KabyLake processors.

Yep, it's exactly the problem: SSID mess and lack of any credible documentation & support information for internal components / MoBos.
EDIT TO ADD: Funny enough, I just realised that this BIOS is most likely applicable in case of my PC as well (can't remember the SSID, doh!) - and as far as I'm concerned I was not prompted to download/upgrade it via HP Support Assistant in the recent weeks.
I will give it a go later today.
