162- system options not set
Your system configuration has changed since your last boot. Addition of a hard drive, etc. ,or loss of power to the real time clock has occurred. Pressing F1 will record the new configuration. If this message persist, you may need to replace the on board battery.

@38573857, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The message you're seeing on your HP PC is a BIOS-level alert, indicating a potential CMOS battery issue or a change in hardware configuration. Let's break down the situation and walk through the meaning and solutions.
🔍 Message Analysis
1. “162 - System options not set”
This indicates that the system has detected a hardware configuration change or lost BIOS settings. Common causes include:
- CMOS battery failure (the battery that stores BIOS settings when the PC is off)
- BIOS/UEFI reset
- Hardware changes (like adding or removing RAM or hard drives)
2. “Your system configuration has changed…”
This confirms:
- Hardware changes
- CMOS battery losing power or settings (especially if it shows this at every boot)
3. “PXE 2.1 Build 086 (WFM 2.0)”
PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) appears when the system tries to boot from a network because it doesn't detect your hard drive or operating system properly. This might mean:
- Your boot order got reset (likely due to the CMOS battery)
- Your hard drive isn’t being detected
- Or there's no bootable OS installed
✅ Solution Steps
🔧 Step 1: Press F1
- This will confirm the new configuration and allow you to enter the BIOS/UEFI screen or boot the PC.
🔋 Step 2: Replace the CMOS Battery
- Most HP PCs use a CR2032 coin-cell battery (similar to a watch battery).
- Open your PC, locate the battery on the motherboard, and replace it.
- After replacing, you’ll likely need to:
- Set the date and time in BIOS
- Set the boot order to ensure it boots from your hard drive
⚙️ Step 3: Check BIOS Boot Order
- Press F10 (or ESC → then F10) to enter BIOS Setup during boot.
- Navigate to Boot Options.
- Ensure the hard drive or Windows Boot Manager is listed first, not PXE/network boot.
- Save and exit.
💾 Step 4: Confirm Hard Drive Detection
- While in BIOS, check if your storage drive is listed.
- If not, reseat the drive (especially for older SATA drives) or check the cables.
🛠 If You Keep Seeing PXE Boot
PXE boot appears only when no other bootable device is found. If you fixed BIOS settings and still get this:
- The hard drive might be faulty or disconnected.
- The OS may be missing or corrupted.
- Try booting from a Windows USB installer to check the drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
