Changing boot order in BIOS

How do I change the bios boot order to a usb flash drive in my windows 8 pc.

On the newer HP's - start tapping Esc before pressing the physical start button and keep tapping until a menu pops up.  From that menu pick F9.  You can try tapping F9 at start up, also.  These will not work if the PC is waking.  It must be done from a "cold start".  Also, a bootable USB stick needs to be inserted prior to the startup.

NO FULL MODEL stated. just 23 (this is  a not full name)so anwsers will be short or wrong.

on my LT , the F9 key allows me to boot to all things botable on the fly

power on tap f9 like a woodpeckerbird.  bingo a boot menu.

but if want to boot all the time to (on mine) 1 of 5 other things.  i go into the FIRST BIOS screen

then in said main screen there is a boot order screen in all bios, made,  even back to 1979 we did this, (with setupdisk)

the boot order on mine i can even boot to SSD#2 (yes it can boot to 1 of 2 hdd or SSD, usb sticks, DVD, and SDmem cards.

its very flexible.

see that book see the words ESC and F10 and F11 there.

those are the BIOS HOT KEYS. 

make sure the batteries in the keyboard are not dead,(wireless kbd or  mouse) if opted day1.

the F9 may be dead on this class pc pc.  the book says push ESC and find the boot order

 hp's only weakness IMO,is the poor level of documentation of BIOS.

they have generic pages.

but not indepth BIOS information , on 1 model, specific,   and is a complex topic.  (not to mention generational vast changes, etc)

in fact there should be a GUIDEs page titled  (HP, BIOS for this PC , in depth)

but we techs don't care we know how to run it and poke around there, and omg. look here.

F10 system config tab

boot options

down arrror 5 times, aahhhh

legacy boot order.

hdd1   <<<<< means try this first.

dvd

hdd2.

usb disk. 1,2,3, whatever is there.

sd-mem.

usb floppy

dock upgrade bay disk

ethernet boot.

see/  vast options there and are stored in NVram (CMOS)+ coin battery power.

then each boot you do does this selection each boot.

if UEFI setup, on same page, its different but you dont have that i bet.
