Hi @Gastricvoyance,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how worrying it can be when your computer powers on and then shuts off unexpectedly, even though you see the green light on the motherboard.

Could you please share the exact HP model number of your computer? Also, let me know if you hear any beeps, fan spins, or see anything on the screen before it powers off.

Here are a few steps you can try:

  •  Check power connections: Ensure the power cable is firmly connected to both the wall outlet and the computer. If possible, test with another outlet or power cable.
  •  Disconnect peripherals: Remove all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) and try powering on with just the keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected.
  •  Perform a power reset: Disconnect the power cable, press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge residual power, then reconnect and try again.
  •  Check for overheating: Make sure the vents are clear of dust and the fans spin briefly when powering on .

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
