I tried to install the newest BIOS update on my PC. Immediately after inserting the USB and starting with Windows + B The following error beep sequence occured : "Long Long Short Short" which according to the HP support page means:

----------------------------------------------

The red light blinks twice, and then two, short white light blinks (2 long red, 2 short white)

This condition indicates that the main area (DXE) of the BIOS has become corrupted and no recovery binary image is available. It can also occur when updating the BIOS.

  1. Allow the system to complete its updates and any changes.

  2. Attempt Sure Start Recovery if the updates are not installing as expected.

----------------------------------------------

So I restarted and entered the HP Startup menu and selected "System Recovery". This then leads me to the GNU GRUB Startup screen where you can select Ubuntu, Memory test etc. Unfortunately at this point I am unable to use my keyboard to select anything...

Interestingly enough, when I just start the PC normally I can enter Ubuntu without problems except from new visual glitches with mouse and windows.

Any ideas what I could do?

Hi @DiCaLo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Could you confirm the exact HP model of your PC or laptop? (This helps us check the right BIOS recovery methods.)
  • When you created the BIOS update USB, did you use HP’s official BIOS update utility or download the file manually?
  • Is your keyboard USB or wireless, and have you tried different ports to see if it responds at the GRUB menu?

Troubleshooting steps to try

  1. Recreate the BIOS recovery USB
    • Use another computer to download the latest BIOS update directly from HP’s support site for your exact model.
    • Format the USB drive to FAT32 before copying the BIOS recovery files.
  2. Try HP Sure Start Recovery
    • On many HP systems, pressing Windows + B (or Windows + V) while powering on with the USB inserted can trigger recovery.
    • Hold the keys until you hear beeps or see the recovery screen.
  3. Check keyboard input at GRUB
    • If your keyboard isn’t working at the GRUB menu, try a wired USB keyboard in a different port (preferably a USB 2.0 port).
    • Sometimes wireless or advanced gaming keyboards don’t initialize early enough in the boot process.
  4. Reset BIOS settings
    • If you can access BIOS setup (usually by pressing Esc or F10 at startup), try loading default settings and saving.
    • This can sometimes clear corrupted configuration values.
  5. Visual glitches in Ubuntu
  • Since you can still boot into Ubuntu, the glitches may be related to graphics drivers. Once BIOS recovery is stable, reinstalling or updating your GPU drivers in Ubuntu could help.

I hope this helps.
