My friend had me take her Envy laptop hone to install a Linux VM on her Envy computer. When I turned on the laptop for the first time, Windows did a massive update download and needed a restart. Since then, the Windows login screen won't respond to keyboard input, nor trackpad use to let me get the password entry bar. I can't seem to figure out how to restart the Envy as the power button only puts the laptop to sleep, rather than turning it off/restarting to see if that is all that is needed

Hi @Tape_Reel,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the laptop might be in a state where it's not responding properly after the update. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Force Shutdown:
- Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds. This should force the laptop to shut down completely. After it turns off, press the power button again to turn it back on.
Disconnect Peripherals:
- If you have any external devices connected (like USB drives, external keyboards, etc.), unplug them and then try restarting the laptop.
Try Safe Mode:
- If the laptop still isn't responding, you might need to boot into Safe Mode. To do this:
- After turning on the laptop, as soon as the HP logo appears, press the F11 key repeatedly until you see the recovery options screen.
- From the recovery options, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the laptop restarts, press the 5 or F5 key to start Safe Mode with Networking.
Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- If you can access BIOS/UEFI settings:
- Restart the laptop and press the Esc key repeatedly until you see the Startup Menu.
- Select F10 to enter BIOS/UEFI settings.
- Check if there are any settings related to USB or input devices that might be causing issues.
Reset the Laptop:
- If you can't get into Safe Mode or BIOS, you might need to perform a system reset:
- Turn off the laptop (using the force shutdown method if necessary).
- Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button simultaneously until the recovery screen appears.
- Follow the prompts to reset or refresh the PC.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
