HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-3000i (4M0J9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi everyone,

Recently bought my HP Pavilion Desktop. Most of the time, but not all, when pressing the 'switch on' button, all I see on my screen is the HP logo, nothing else happens. When I 'long press' the on/off button (or remove power supply) the machine switches off. When pressing the 'switch on' button again, the PC boots up okay.

I've run all diagnostic checks. They show no problems. Computer works fine once booted up properly.

Any suggestions as to why the computer doesn't boot up properly at the first time of asking?

Thanks.

Mike

Hi @RugbyMike,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Pavilion Desktop PC is experiencing an intermittent boot issue where it doesn't complete the boot process on the first attempt.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Step 1

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit

Step3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice  and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.

After the above  troubleshooting steps if the unit  turns on
1. Check for BIOS Updates:

  • Make sure your BIOS is up to date. Sometimes, manufacturers release BIOS updates to address stability issues or improve hardware compatibility.
  • You can check for BIOS updates on the HP support website specific to your model. Follow the instructions carefully when updating the BIOS, as an incorrect update can cause further issues.

2. Reset BIOS to Default Settings:

  • Sometimes, the BIOS settings might cause the system to hang during the boot process. Resetting the BIOS to its default settings might help.
  • To reset the BIOS, restart your PC, enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10, F2, ESC, or DEL during startup), and look for an option to reset to default settings.

3. Check Power Settings:

  • There could be an issue with how the power settings are configured in Windows or the BIOS.
  • In Windows, go to Control Panel > Power Options, and ensure that your power plan settings are set to "Balanced" or "High Performance."
  • Check the BIOS for power management settings and ensure they are configured correctly.

4. Check Fast Startup:

  • Windows 11 has a feature called "Fast Startup" that can sometimes cause boot issues.
  • To disable Fast Startup, go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable. Uncheck "Turn on fast startup" and save the changes. Then, restart your computer and see if the issue persists.

5. Inspect Hardware Connections:

  • Ensure all internal components, such as RAM, storage drives, and graphics cards, are securely connected. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause intermittent boot issues.
  • You can also try reseating these components (carefully remove and reinsert them) to ensure proper connections.

6. Check for Faulty RAM or Storage:

7. Run System File Checker:

  • Corrupted system files can sometimes cause boot issues. Running the System File Checker (SFC) can help repair these files.
  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run sfc /scannow. Let it complete and fix any issues it finds.

8. Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Some software or drivers that load during the boot process might be causing conflicts.
  • Try booting in Safe Mode (usually by holding down Shift while clicking Restart) and see if the issue persists. If not, you may have a software or driver issue that needs addressing.

9. Check Event Viewer:

  • Windows Event Viewer logs can provide clues about what might be causing the boot issue.
  • Search for Event Viewer in the Start menu, navigate to Windows Logs > System, and look for any critical errors or warnings that occur around the time of the failed boot attempts.

10. Check Power Supply:

  • A faulty or insufficient power supply unit (PSU) can cause boot issues. If possible, try testing with a different power supply or have a professional check the PSU.

Thank you for your reply, Gaya.

The computer has behaved itself since I made the post. I am very reluctant to get involved with the internal workings of the machine as there seems too much scope for me to get something wrong and make matters worse.

All recommendations seem complicated and I do not feel comfortable doing them as I don't want to risk invalidating my guarantee.
