Greetings

I have a problem with my HP PC Windows 7.It suddenly stopped working. When I turn it on the screen remains black and the keyboard does not light up also, only a mouse lights up.

What could be a cause of this if I may ask.

Will be waiting to hear from you

Hi @Victor80001

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

i understand that your HP PC is not starting up and displaying a black screen, it's possible that there may be an issue with the BIOS or motherboard.

Here are detailed troubleshooting steps you can follow:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the computer.
  • Disconnect all external devices.
  • Unplug the power cord from the computer.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and try to start the computer again.

Check the Power Supply:

  • Ensure the power outlet is functional.
  • Make sure the power cable and adapter are correctly connected and functioning.
  • For desktop PCs, ensure the power supply switch at the back is turned on.

Inspect the Monitor:

  • Verify that the monitor is turned on and set to the correct input.
  • Check the monitor’s brightness and contrast settings.
  • Confirm that the video cable is securely connected to both the PC and the monitor.

Reset the BIOS:

  • Turn off the computer and unplug the power supply.
  • Open the case and locate the BIOS reset jumper on the motherboard ("Clear CMOS" or "CLRTC" jumper).
  • Move the jumper from the default position to the reset position for about 5-10 seconds, then move it back.
  • Alternatively, remove the CMOS battery for approximately 5 minutes and then reinsert it.
  • Close the case, reconnect the power supply, and power on the computer.

Verify Internal Connections:

  • Open the case and check that all components are properly seated, including RAM, GPU, and power cables.
  • Reseat memory modules and expansion cards to ensure they are securely attached.

Test with Minimal Hardware:

  • Remove all non-essential components.
  • Leave only the CPU, one stick of RAM, and integrated graphics connected.
  • See if the PC posts and boots normally.

Check for POST Codes and Error Beeps:

  • Listen for any error beeps when turning on the computer. Refer to your motherboard's manual for beep code explanations.
  • Observe any LED lights that may indicate hardware faults.

Update or Restore BIOS Firmware:

  • If you can access BIOS, check for any firmware updates.
  • Consider restoring the BIOS to default settings if anything was recently changed.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
