I tried to restart the Pavilion 22 after having stopped using it for more than 5 years. Got black screen with message keyboard error time & date not set F1 boot. I have replaced the battery in the wireless keyboard. I pressed F1 and it didn't work. Any advice to get it working would be appreciated.

Hi @Caidel28,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re having trouble with your HP Pavilion 22 after a long period of inactivity. The black screen with a "keyboard error" message and prompts to press F1 usually indicates that there might be an issue with the keyboard connection or BIOS settings. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Check Keyboard Connection

  • Ensure that the wireless receiver for the keyboard is properly connected to a USB port on your computer.
  • Try plugging the receiver into a different USB port.
  • If you have a wired USB keyboard available, connect it to the computer and see if you can proceed by pressing F1 or other keys.
  • If using a wireless keyboard, ensure that the batteries are fresh and correctly installed. Sometimes, using new batteries can resolve connection issues.

2. Check and Set the Time and Date

  • When you see the prompt to press F1, try pressing F2 or ESC to enter the BIOS or UEFI settings. Different systems might use different keys to enter BIOS.
  • In the BIOS or UEFI menu, locate the settings for the system time and date. Correct any discrepancies and save the settings.
  • Look for options like “Date and Time” or “System Time” and adjust them as needed.
  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS. The system will reboot, and you should see if the issue is resolved.

3. Check and Replace CMOS Battery

  • The CMOS battery on the motherboard helps maintain system settings, including the time and date. If the system hasn’t been used for a long time, the CMOS battery might be depleted.
  • Turn off the computer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the computer case (if it’s a desktop) and locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard. It’s usually a coin-cell battery (CR2032).
  • Remove the old battery and replace it with a new one. Reassemble the computer and power it on.

4. Reset BIOS to Default Settings

  • Access the BIOS/UEFI settings using F2, ESC, or another appropriate key.
  • Look for an option to “Load Setup Defaults,” “Restore Defaults,” or similar.
  • Select this option to reset the BIOS settings to their default state.
  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS. Check if the system boots normally.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the computer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) from the computer.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Plug the computer back in and power it on.

6. Check for Hardware Issues

  • If you’re comfortable opening the computer, check that all internal components (RAM, hard drive, cables) are securely connected.
  • Ensure there’s no visible physical damage to the motherboard or other components.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi  Rachel

Thanks for your reply

I have managed to get it started but still have the problems of connecting the keyboard and mouse both are wireless. Although I can use the keyboard on the screen but not mouse. I went to the device manager and there is no option for connecting the mouse. There is no Bluetooth in the system. Is there a free download link for Bluetooth?

I hope you can help.

Kind regards
