s5-1120 Slimline Pavillion
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My computor boots fine until I get to my homepage. Then, the computor tries to complete start-up, but doesn't finish, and loops this process. I am still able to move the mouse, but can't click on any icons.

This just started when I walked away after sending a work email.

No error messages until I ran a diagnostic.

No recent software or driver changes other than typical Windows or HP updates.

LAN Internet connection.

Has my computor just died, and/or will I be able to retrieve the files one last time?

To fix the problem, I purchased a “USB 2.0 To IDE/SATA Adapter Kit” at a local electronics store, removed the HP Hard Drive in question, and was able to hook up the old HHD to the SATA adapter; connecting it to my new computer. I could see all of the files on the old HHD for transfer. I am in good shape, and have all of my old files.

Hi

A Smart HDD test failure means you must replace the HDD. It is very close to failure.

You may be able to get your files/data off of the HDD.

I would not wait too long in moving data off this HDD or continue trying to load the operating system.

Let the forum know if you require assistance saving data.

We should be able to assist.

Yes I will need assistance trying to get my files off of the failing HDD. I do not have a boot disk, so I am hoping this will not require me taking the computer to a specialist.

Hi ive never used these message boards before so im sorry if im doing this wrong...but my computer is having this issue. Of looping and I can't log in. It says smart test failed error 303.

Best buy took out hard drive, and said it's corrupted and can't get data off of it.

Hard drive is back in computer.

Also computer is a Hp touchsmart 520 all in one. Runs on Windows 7

Is there something I can try? As it has literally all my important info and family pictures.

Hi MissStubz,

It is best to start a new thread to get the best response from other forum members.

This site (Link) has tips on using Linux Live to solve problems with a corrupted Windows installation. Look at "Access or Backup Files from Your Dead Windows PC" and the links in this article. I don't know what BestBuy did when trying to back up data.

Your HDD may be unmountable. It may not be possible to access the files on the affected HDD using Linux or by connecting this HDD to a different PC as a data drive.

The next option, professional data recovery, can be very expensive if this HDD cannot be mounted.

Regards
