Thx much! So this means that Windows Update will run as normal when it's supposed to?

Just to add to the insult: my OMEN PC is neither on the list, nor experienced this issue (I'm on still on Anniversary Update). And yet, as prompted by HP Support Assistant just a minute ago:

I'm not sure what to think about it...

Its about time HP fixed this, I checked for HP updates using HP Support Assistant and the fix finnaly showed up, the ones I download a few days ago wouldnt do a thing so since I read all the positive post about this fix working I went and did a complete factory reset with the USB recovery stic I created when I first set it up...everything went perfect....deleted the recovery partition since I had the USB stick, I then created a recovery Image using Windows  after I uninstalled all the HP stuff I dont want and after I installed all my programs except my games....I had windows save that Image in the new recovery partition I created so if for some reason something happens I can restore this Omen without HP junk and with my stuff and incase something goes wrong real bad I can still restore it to Factory condition using the USB Recovery stick...now lets all pray Octobers update goes smoothly.....this forum is a great place to start when your HP is messing up

> Its about time HP fixed this,

Problem started Tuesday, September 12, after 10 AM Pacific, as HP computers "called home", and downloaded the just-released Windows Updates.

HP released a fix on/before Tuesday, September 19 -- less than 5 "business days" later.

The problem needed to be identified, a fix written, and the "Quality Assurance" group had to verify that the fix did not "break" anything else, and that supporting documents had to be written in many languages, and the fix needed to be uploaded to the repository that HP Support Assistant queries,.

Could it have been done any "speedier"?  I doubt it.

> now let's all pray October's update goes smoothly

What about agnostic people?  Do they pray?  To whom? :generic:

>  This forum is a great place to start when your HP is messing up.

Yes, but I wish that people would read through the postings in this category, before posting a very similar question.

It causes responses to be "scattered", and other "duplication" of effort.  Sigh.

I have the above updates available via the support assistant.  Are any of these absolutely "necessary"?

>  updates available via the Support Assistant.  Are any of these absolutely "necessary"?

Updates available

1. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

2. Realtek RTL8xxx Series Bluetooth Driver for Microsoft Windows

3. HP Wireless Button Driver

4. HP Recovery Manager Update

5. Realtek Audio Driver

6. Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver

7. Realtek RTL8xxx Series Wireless LAN Drivers

8. Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver

9. Elan Touchpad Driver
--------------

My opinion:

NECESSARY/IMPORTANT:

#6 -- support for the hardware on your motherboard.

Reboot after installing, and then run Windows Update.

WU may find more hardware updates.

RECOMMENDED:

#5 - if you are not getting any "sound" out of your speakers

#7 - if you cannot contact to a "wireless" access-point

#9 - if your touchpad is not working, and you want to use it

OPTIONAL:

#8 - possibly better performance when connected via Ethernet cable to your router

#2 - if you are a user of Bluetooth (speakers or headset or iPhone or wireless mouse)

EVENTUALLY:

#3 - if you want to use the wireless ON/OFF button, i.e., turn it OFF in a commercial airplane;

#1 - if you ever need to use the built-in hardware diagnostics tools

#4 - if you ever need to "recover" (reload) Windows

Hello everyone. Brand new HP OMEN 870-224 that I picked-up today (yeah...another one). Here's what I did to prevent the blackscreen at login (AppReadiness) issue when setting it up (i.e. booting for the first time).

1) When I powered it on for the first time ever (i.e. it is brand new), it led me through the usual process and eventually asked for my network key. I did NOT provide the key because I did NOT want any automatic updates to occur through my Wi-Fi.

2) When the computer booted, I turned ON "Metered Connection" to help prevent MS updates from downloading/installing.

3) Established a network connection (I now entered my network key) for step 4) below.

4) Started my "HP Support Assistant" and checked for updates.

5) Found and installed "HP Image Enhancement for System Logon".

6) Restarted HP OMEN.

7) Turned OFF "Metered Connection" to allow MS updates.

😎 Installed MS updates...HP OMEN re-booted itself. NO Blackscreen problem.

9) Manually restarted a couple times and shut-off and restarted a couple times...still no Blackscreen problem.

So it appears that, at least for now, the "HP Image Enhancement for System Logon" worked for me without any other work-arounds.

Windows 10 (1703)
