Desktop Pavilion 510-p136
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Desktop pavilion 510-p136 which comes with BIOS F16 and 1TB HDD. BIOS F16 works fine with SSD replacement.

After successfully upgrading to F18, It lockups on HP logo when Samsung Evo 850 or Crucial MX300 ssd is installed. BIOS F18 works fine when I put the HDD back but does not recognize Samsung or Crucial ssd.

I have tried to roll back BIOS from HP Hardware Diagnostics by pressing F2 or from Windows Key + B key but I can't roll back to F16 to use ssd.

Any help is very much appreciated.

@tonynhd

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion Desktop - 510-p136 PC. I read that you have updated to BIOS F.18. The PC does not boot and is stuck on the HP logo when Samsung Evo 850 or Crucial MX300 SSD is installed. The PC boots fine when you remove the SSD and install the 1TB hard drive.

You have to rollback the BIOS but that did not work. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.

I did some research and found that the BIOS F.18 version sets the BIOS rollback limit version to F.18. Therefore you cannot get back to the previous version of the BIOS.

However, you may try a workaround to install the previous BIOS version:

  • Let the laptop boot up fine with the 1 TB hard drive.
  • Download and run the previous BIOS F.16 version from this link. This should overwrite the existing BIOS and go back to F.16 version BIOS.

You may try another workaround by following the below steps:

  • Download the BIOS F.16 version to a USB flash drive using another computer.
  • Connect the USB flash drive to this PC. Restart the PC and go to the boot device options (usually comes up by hitting the f9 key).
  • Select the option to boot from the USB device.

Hope this information helps.Let me know how it goes. Cheers! 🙂

First, thank you for taking the time to help me. However, I still cannot roll back BIOS.

Tried your first workaround, it did not work

Tried your second workaround and also did not work

Tried F2 and used Firmware Management and got error "Unable to open BIOS signature file"

The BIOS log file mentioned that it failed to read "081B4.s12" file. BIOS folder in USB only have 2 files "081B4.bin" and "081B4.sig" A post somewhere said there should be all 3 files to have a successful roll back? Please help.

Could you please make the pictures less "fuzzy" ?

I'm guessing that the above is a screen-shot from the writing of the BIOS to your USB device.

> Tried your second workaround and also did not work

I don't see an entry, other than 'SATA 0', as a possible "boot" device.

I see "missing operating system", then "cable failure", because the PXE (Pre Execution Environment) could not find a "boot-server" on your local network.  Which devices have you marked as "bootable", and in what order?

I have this exact same issue with the BIOS version and PC.  Were you able to find a way to get the SSD working with this BIOS version?

Did you try the "workarounds" listed in the update: ‎06-22-2017 06:42 PM  ???

What happened when you did?

F18 specifically states that it won't allow a rollback to an earlier version.  The BIOS update tool won't allow it to go back to F16.

If I attache the SSD, the desktop won't get past the System Info Page - Hit ESC to enter Setup, so I can't try and make any BIOS changes there.

Any other suggestions?
