Hi @rchard3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The "Boot Device Not Found" message doesn't always mean the hard drive has failed. It can be caused by a hardware issue, a loose or failing drive, or a problem with the Windows boot files. The first step is to determine whether the notebook is still detecting and communicating with the storage drive.

Please start by running the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  1. Turn the notebook completely off.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Select Component Tests > Storage.
  5. Run both the Quick Test and, if it passes, the Extensive Test.
  6. Let us know the results, including any Failure ID or error code if one is displayed.

Once you have the results:

  • If the storage tests pass, the hardware is likely functioning correctly, and we'll focus on repairing the Windows boot files or recovering the operating system.
  • If the storage tests fail, please share the Failure ID, and we'll help determine the next steps for the drive.

A few additional questions that will help us narrow this down:

  • What is the exact model or product number of your HP computer?
  • Did this error appear after a Windows update, BIOS update, or was the computer working normally before this happened?
  • Are you able to access the BIOS (F10), and does the SSD or hard drive appear under the storage information?

Once we know whether the storage hardware passes the diagnostics, we can guide you through the appropriate next steps. If the drive is healthy, we'll help you troubleshoot the Windows installation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
