my wife accidently knocked my son's computer off of it's stand and now it gives a "boot device not found" error. I troubleshot by holding f11 on start up ad ran the hard drive test and the results were: testing drive-1/ smart check- passed/ Long DST- warning. i figured this means that i need to replace his hard drive. if so, i'm planning to upgrade it to a 1 tb ssd. thoughts?

Hello
the hard drive is defective
It can continue to operate for a certain time, but it can definitively break down, if it is not already the case!
If possible, save personal data
Try a full reinstall
Be careful even if it works, it may permanently break down, save the data regularly.
This may allow you to use the computer while you find a hard drive!
Your computer should be this

Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7)
if the original hard drive is usable
you can try using cloning software to copy all of its contents to the new SSD
But he risks copying errors
Otherwise, you can also try an installation from iso microsoft:
