windows 11 compatibility

My old All-in-One HP 23-r158la stopped working. Windows 10 starts, but I can't control anything, keyboard not recognized, desktop empty, and I suspect a virus.

So, I was all in for a revamp. Replaced the RAM with 2x8GB and removed the HDD, then connected the SSD.

I booted from the USB pendrive with Windows 11 Home Installer. Everything was smooth until the last reboot.

HP support does not recognize my serial number, so I can't check for a BIOS update. The date is in 2015, so it is old.

I'm not sure how to continue

HP has retired support for your PC since it is more than 10 years old.

Can you get into the BIOS and let me know what the SSID is?

It should be a 4-character ID such as 2B3B for example.

While you're in there also let me know if there is a setting (normally in the security setting to enable/disable or hide a TPM security device.

There are HP notebook PC's with AMD processors from that era that get the same error, and it is related to the TPM security device being enabled.

I made a change in the secure start, from enabled to disabled.

Same  infinite loop of preparing an automatic repair->diagnostic->attempt to fix->restart ->BSOD

Is there a TPM security setting?

If not, then that isn't the problem.

You can go back and enable secure boot.

That is preferable.

Let me hunt around and see if I can find a BIOS update for your PC.

The BIOS update worked fine, now I have TMP

But sadly, the processor is too old, and everything else checked compatibility.

I installed a fresh Windows 10 on the new drive, and to my surprise, the licence is there. Magic! 

I'm running the SSD on the DVD SATA connector. Is there any limitation? It does not feel as fast as I expected.

And I can't boot from there if the HDD is connected

Glad the BIOS update worked for you.

Yes there is a limitation on the DVD drive port speed.

Since a DVD drive cannot run any faster than the SATA 1 (1.5) GBPS transfer speed the controller is most likely not SATA III and maybe not even SATA II.

Is there a reason why you can't plug the SSD where the hard drive plugs into?

Regarding Windows 11:

If you want to install W11 on your PC as is, you can, but you would have to use a workaround that bypasses the W11 hardware checks so you can do it.

The SSD is small, 240 GB, so I wanted to keep the HDD, but I'll change the location and connect the HDD to a desktop tower and access it via the home network or set up cloud storage. I guess it won't fit the DVD drive. And maybe reconnect the DVD drive.

I read about the hack, maybe I'll take that path.

10 hours in, oh my..

Well, I took my chances with the same Windows 11 Home installer, and guess what, it went through like a charm, no warnings, no BSOD, no hacks.

The Windows update took too much time, even on an Ethernet cable.

Then I installed a USB dongle I previously had to improve wifi and Bluetooth. The wifi worked fine, 5GHz, Bluetooth didn't, but I'm ok.

Moving the SSD to the original HDD SATA connector made a difference.

I have two small issues: One, the SD card reader is a minor inconvenience, which I can live with. Second, SM Bus Controller, is it critical?

The Video driver seems ok, I'm not sure if risking adding something from AMD. But a little bit of performance will be appreciated. I'm doing a restore checkpoint and complete disk image.
