Pavilion 550-270na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm about to start using Topaz Gigapixel if necessary with a built to order PC. However, my 550-270na could do the job if I can upgrade the GPU to a GTX 1080 or better with 8GB RAM.

Is such an upgrade feasible and is it prudent/feasible to upgrade the power supply?

TIA.  GC.

You will have to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU), also.  The current PSU is only 180W.  I would recommend not less than a PSU with 500W.  Check the manufacturer's website for the wattage required for the 1080 that you choose.  I suggest that you consider a full modular PSU.  They allow you to use only the cables that are absolutely necessary.  This allows for better airflow.

Here is a HP Knowledge Base article to explain what to consider when upgrading the video card: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Gaming-Knowledge-Base/Upgrade-Video-Card/ta-p/7481981

There are three main things to consider: 1) the length of the card, 2) the wattage required to run it properly and 3) does the card require any 1x6-pin, 1x8-pin or both, PCIe power connectors.  The article will explain how to measure the space where the card will be installed to allow for good airflow.
