A good video card can be a must when gaming. It is an easy upgrade for someone without much technology background. However, there are some things that you have to consider when choosing a card.
The first thing to consider is the BIOS/UEFI in the motherboard. Most newer video cards require UEFI in the motherboard instead of a standard/Legacy BIOS. You can find this information in the "System Information" app, in the BIOS Mode section, on your computer. The BIOS can't be upgraded to UEFI. There are three other important things to consider: 1) the length of the card; 2) the wattage required to run the card properly and 3) does the power supply unit (PSU) have any necessary 1x6-pin, 1x8-pin or both supplementary power connectors. If not, this will require a PSU upgrade.
You can determine if the card will fit by measuring the space where it will be installed from the Back I/O ports to the front of the case. There should be enough space to allow for good airflow. The airflow is extremely important because these newer high-power cards develop a lot of heat. HEAT is your enemy in a computer. The wattage required is very important, also. It is normally recommended that the PSU has 100W to 150W more than the card requires. This allows for extra power for peak needs and for other future upgrades.
Once these requirements are met you can choose the manufacturer that you like and find a card that will meet your needs. A good resource for assuring that you choose the best card for your system is the manufacturer's Tech Support. They are the experts on their products. I have always found them to be very helpful.
There are numerous videos online to help you with the actual installation.

You are welcome, @BTVN! Thank you for the additional information.
I believe that you can use an external video adapter successfully. Here is a page from StarTech's website: https://www.startech.com/AV/display-and-video-adapters/
I normally recommend their products because their Tech Support is very helpful and they have excellent products. I use their Chat Live option when possible. It gets me my answers very quickly. You can contact them to assure that you get the best adapter for your system. They won't try to sell you something that won't work.

@BR24, unfortunately, the HD Graphics 620 is integrated into the processor. There is no way to upgrade the processor or add dedicated graphics. Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for the laptop: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06172090
Look at the section titled "Component replacement procedures" for a list of components that can be replaced.

@Soupy05, unfortunately, you are very limited with choices for a video card. All of the newer cards require UEFI in the motherboard instead of a standard/Legacy BIOS: https://www.howtogeek.com/175649/what-you-need-to-know-about-using-uefi-instead-of-the-bios/
HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012. Your computer was released 20-May-2011. The BIOS can't be upgraded to UEFI. In fact, HP no longer makes software and driver updates available for your computer. The last series of cards not to require UEFI were the GTX 660/670's. If you can find one of them, you will most likely have to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU), also. It is only 250W.

@david296, unfortunately, I don't believe that you can upgrade your laptop at all; with possibly one exception, the hard drive (HDD) to a SSD. I can't say for certain, however. HP doesn't provide any upgrade information in their manuals section: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-15-cs3000-laptop-pc-series/29133460/model/31594537/...
This means that they don't expect, even Authorized Service Providers, to do upgrades. I wish that I had better news for you. It is difficult to upgrade laptops for two main reasons: 1) the size of the case. It doesn't allow for good airflow and 2) the AC power adapter (65W) in your laptop, doesn't provide enough power.

Old Geekster,
Thanks for that info. It seems when some new game comes out, an implied requirement is to purchase a new Super Computer, or upgrade your old boat anchor with a bunch of gadgets. I bought the latter, but it was supposed to be an upgraded, gaming capable unit with tons of hard drive space, RAM, High Grade Video Graphics Card and processor speed. The old game disks I loaded popped right onto the unit, and they play fine. However, the X-Plane 10 Disk Set was an absolute nightmare, and I never did get the program loaded. The sole problem I have now is with MS Flight Simulator X. That problem is a stretched cockpit instrument display that depicts oval-shaped flight instruments. Another expert helped with some graphics adjustment suggestions, but the 'cure' was to narrow the display, with wide, blacked out portions along the edges. Anyway, I'll keep plugging, albeit with oval instruments. Again, thanks for your help.

@Daveyl123, I haven't even tried to install my MS Flt Sim X in Win 10. I guess I will have to give it a try to see what happens. I don't have the Yoke or pedals that I once had, but I can operate it with the mouse and keyboard. I suggest that you contact MS Tech Support to see if they can help solve your problem. Since both the game and OS are MS, they may have a cure. Hopefully, the cure is not as bad as the disease. 😉

@Wakwe1002, I believe that your problem is caused by the fact that the video card is not compatible with the motherboard. The information that I could find on your computer states that it was released in 2011. The GT 710 requires UEFI in the motherboard and not a Legacy BIOS:
https://www.howtogeek.com/175649/what-you-need-to-know-about-using-uefi-instead-of-the-bios/
HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012. I suggest that you check with the card manufacturer's Tech Support to see if they have a solution for you. It may be that there is a Firmware update for the card that will solve your problem.

Hello all,
I wanted to upgrade the video card on my son's computer - OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0014. I bought "XFX AMD Radeon™ RX 5700 XT 8GB GDDR6 RAW II". However, after installing and connecting it, the video card is not giving any signal to the monitor. My initial assumption is that PSU is not powerful enough, so I'm looking to upgrade it.
I'm looking at "Thermaltake - SMART 700W ATX 80 Plus Power Supply". Can this PSU fit the case of OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0014?
I appreciate your help.

@Hod82, welcome to the forum.
Sorry for the late reply, but I didn't get a notification when you made your post. You are limited to which video cards you can install because of your 310W power supply unit (PSU). The motherboard has a proprietary 4-pin power connector; not the standard 24-pin ATX power connector. Here is a Power Supply Cross-Reference Guide to help you choose a new PSU: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Knowledge-Base/Power-Supply-Cross-Reference-for-specific-model...
All of the PSU's in the Guide in the 690 series will work with your motherboard. This means that the most powerful will be 500W (L5757-800). It has a PCIe 6+2 power connector. If you decide to upgrade the PSU, I will recommend a new video card.

@rapaya , welcome to the forum.
Your assumption is absolutely correct! The PSU in your son's computer is 500W. Here are the specifications for the card: https://www.xfxforce.com/gpus/radeon-tm-rx-5700-xt-8gb-gddr6-raw-ii-ultra
As you will see, the minimum wattage is 600W and the card requires a 1x6-pin and 1x8-pin PCIe power connector. Personally, I recommend at least a 700W PSU. I normally recommend a PSU with at least 100W to 150W more than the cards manufacturer states. The best way to know if the PSU will fit into the case is measure the current PSU and compare those measurements to the one that you choose.

I am upgrading HP Pavilion 590-0033w graphics. Installed is Intel UHD 630. It is giving me 3 GB, not bad, but I want to play Horizon Zero Dawn which has a 4 GB minimum.
Purchased GeForce GTX 1650... wanted a GTX 1660, but Best Buy didn't have one in stock here in Anchorage, AK. the 1650 is only 4 GB and the 1660 is 6 GB. Price on the GTX 1650 was good at $179.99. GTX 1660 would have taken a week to be shipped and cost $229.99.
Also got a PSU that was on sale for $49.99. Thermaltake Smart Series 700 watt. Specs on it are Main Power Connector 24 PIN (x1), ATX 12 v 4x4 PIN (x1), SATA 5 PIN (X6), PCi-E 6+2 PIN (x2), Peripheral 4 PIN (x5), Floppy 4 PIN (x1). 5 year warranty, Braided Cable Sleeve, Continuous Power and Ultra Quiet 120 mm Fan.
Spec sheet for PC shows TPD of 65 watts and OEM PSU of 180 watts (gold 90%). The GTX 1650 has a TPD of 75 watts. With the graphics upgrade I will not be further upgrading the system. Can I get away with not upgrading the PSU?

@RogerGaston , welcome to the Community.
The motherboard in your computer is HP proprietary. It has a 4-pin power connector instead of a standard 24-pin ATX power connector. You will have to buy any PSU upgrade from HP. HP has a 500W PSU (L05757-800) that should be compatible with your motherboard.
HP has their components made to their specifications so they work with the other components. Therefore, with the 180W PSU the other components may not be the same as the retail versions. I don't believe that the 1650 will run properly with the 180W PSU.

Placing the 500 watt PSU on order from HP. Since I am waiting for it, going to return the GTX 1650. What low budget GPU do you recommend? GTX 1660, or something better? By the way... next PC will not be an HP product. Being forced to buy an HP PSU convinced me. I feel we have the right to be able to go to a local electronics store and get the parts to repair or upgrade our PC.

Going to do some minor upgrades while waiting on the PSU and GPU. My grandkids have a Slimline 290-p0043w with a 500 GB HHD. First thought was to replace the HDD with a 500 GB SSD. Then noticed in spec's it has an available m.2 slot. So, I am removing the 16 GB M.2 SSD from my computer and installing it in the kid's computer. I'll install a 500 GB M.2 SSD in my PC. My operation system is on a Samsung 500 GB SSD and data is on 1 TB HDD. The HDD can be removed as total data is less than 150 GB and operation system can be moved to the M.2 SSD. I lose 500 GB of data storage capacity but gain a cooler running system and the space was going unused. If I need to store data can move it to the external 4 TB network drive. Just thought of another idea, could replace the Kid's HDD with the 1 TB HDD from my system, which would double their capacity. Now all i have to figure out is how get the Intel Optane working on their PC.

500W PSU (L05757-800) received from HP for HP Pavilion 590-0033w upgrade. Still waiting for delivery of GPU. Going to install PSU today. Have the Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 500GB and 1 TB HDD installed. Disabled Optane Memory management as the Optane Memory was removed from M.2 slot. 32 GB RAM installed. Hopefully PSU install will be compatible, and system will be ready for GPU when it arrives.
Upgrade on Slimline 290-p0043w (grandkid's PC) was done. Turned out the motherboard H370 did not support Intel Optane. Installed Samsung EVO SSD and cloned system image to it. Upgraded RAM to 8 GB.

PSU installed. Can confirm L0575-800 500-watt PSU works with HP Pavilion 590-p0033w. It is larger in size than the OEM 180-watt but works. So quiet I had to put my hand in front of the fan to tell if it was on. Samsung Magician shows M.2 drive at 48 degrees after install. That is a 3 degree drop over the OEM PSU. Feeling good about this upgrade... was worried about heat.

Can you look at it and see if it's compatible with my system and me being able to play Horizon Zero Dawn? Wife put me on a budget for the upgrade and that one more than fits at $180.00. Thanks.

@Pilar155 , welcome to the Community.
The first thing that you have to determine is the style of connector your motherboard has for the PSU; 4 pin or standard 24 pin! If you have the 4pin connector you will have to buy any upgrade PSU from HP. They do have a 500W PSU (L05757-800) that should be compatible with your motherboard. You will have to contact HP Customer Support to make certain they have one to sell you. If you have a 24 pin connector any standard PSU will be compatible. Just measure the existing PSU and compare those measurements to the one that you choose. The wattage is actually up to you. I normally recommend one with at least 100W to 150W more than recommended by the card manufacturer.

Hi, I'm looking to add an RTX 3600TI which I see on another post you've said is compatible with the HP 880-112na which I also own. Similar to that question I'd like to upgrade the power supply, but to this to this one below, it's a Corsair RM750 (2021), RM Series, 750 Watt 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (Triple EPS12V Connectors, Low-Noise Operation, Zero RPM Fan Mode, 105°C Capacitors, Modern Standby) Black
Dimensions wise it'll fit with room to spare, and I imagine there will be plenty of spare cables as the 3060TI requires two whereas the fitted 1070 has one. How does this sound? Thanks in advance. 👍
