8GB Memory Upgrade

I purchased Samsung 4X 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 MHz Desktop DIMM 240pin Memory Ram 800 to upgrade my PC to it's maximum 8GB but as soon as OS loads I get the blue screen of death. The error message varies from boot to boot so not able to give just one message - Issues with Network driver and video driver were just 2 messages. I thought it was defective RAM module so I removed all but one and tested. Did this for each module and all good. I even tried various combinations of the modules giving max 6Gb which showed no problems what so ever. As soon as I max it to 8GB I get blue screen.

Finally I installed a 1X 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 with the new 3X 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 giving me max 7GB which works perfectly.

Is there a maximum limit on using PC2-6400 DDR2-800 MHz RAM modules in the HP DC7800?

I've even tried removing my AMD ASUS Radeon HD5450 graphics card but same problem.

I used to have windows 7 ultima which I upgraded to windows 10 and problem still persists.

Has anyone had this problem?

Hi:

I can tell you that I don't have that problem with my dc7800 CMT, nor on my friend's dc7800 CMT, where I also installed 4 x 2 GB of PC2-800 memory in his PC.

This is the memory I used in both units...worked perfectly right from the moment of installation.

They run 8 GB just fine on Vista, W7, and W10 Pro.

So there is definitely no less than a 8 GB limit on that PC, as set forth on page 11 of the quickspecs below...

It is an issue with your individual PC for which I have no idea what the issue could be.

Could be a fault in the batch of RAM I have.

I'll have to live with 7MB for now. Will look at upgrading machine in near future.

I'm thinking the same thing, or it could be a memory density issue.

HP PC's have to use low density memory, otherwise you run into either the memory not working, or oddball issues like you experienced.

If you can get the same memory I used, you will be all set. 

That I can all but 100% guarantee.

The question I am wrestling with in your situation...is it better to run 2+1+2+1 for 6 GB in DDR mode, or is it better to run 7 GB in SDR mode?

Memory works best in DDR mode, and in order for it to run in DDR mode, it has to be in matched pairs in the alternating memory slots.

Bank 1 is 2 +2 and Bank 2 is 2 +1.

Most of the programs run within Bank 1 memory space so I don't see any major problems. Bank 2 gets used when I start running additional apps or when I am manipulating very large photos.

I have not seen it use more then 4 MB when running 2-3 apps i.e. Lightroom + Affinity Photo.

With my 240Mb SSD and upgraded processor Intel Q9550 2.83GHz this machine is fast. Well at least for my photography needs 🙂

Just a shame on the wasted Samsung 2 Gb module I purchased.

It looks like the right kind from its appearance, but unless you can type in all of those numbers (M368T...) and do a search (which I am not going to do), it would be good find the memory's detailed specs, or at least ask Samsung support if that is low density memory.
