3LA18AA#ABA Pavilion Desktop

Hello,

Sr. Citizen now, and not too sharp with this "stuff", so please bear with me a bit.

Son has:

Serial number:  [Private information removed] Product number: 3LA18AA       This is a Pavilion Desktop.  Came with 12 GB RAM, which I would like to upgrade for him to perhaps 16 GB.  Very reluctant to order a RAM board, as I don't have a clear idea of what I should order. The 12 GB it came with seems to me a bit unusual; always thought they were in multiples of 8 GB  ?  Are there empty slots for another ?  For what RAM sizes ?  **Could you please tell me Exactly what to order (from HP or Amazon) to get sit up to 16 GB, or even 24 GB, please ?    Should I order an 8 GB board, assuming it is available in this size ?    Or a 16 GB ?  Any caveats to installing it, having it recognized, etc.  Thank you very much; appreciate the help, Bob

Hi:

Yes, that is a fairly unusual memory configuration.

Below is the link to the product specs for your PC.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05994886

The memory upgrade info can be found on the above link.

Your PC has two memory slots, and each slot can up to a 16 GB memory module.

You can remove the 4 GB module and add an 8 GB module and have 16 GB, or you can max it out by removing both memory modules and installing 2 x 16 GB of memory.

Below is the link to the Crucial memory report for your model PC.  They sell memory, and guarantee its compatibility.

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hP-Compaq/pavilion-590-p0070

Your PC would use the DDR4-2666 MHz memory modules.

Below is the link to the service guide, where you can find the memory removal and replacement procedure.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for help with this.

Am in my 80's now, and I miss many of the nuances.

Re the 12 GB RAM that apparently my son's Pavilion Desktop has.

Am I correct that there are 2 slots in this pc, and probably one slot has 8 and the other 4 ?

Or, do you think that all 12 is on one card in one slot ?

asking, as 12 seems to be an unusual number for RAM memory.

b. If all on one, can I simply add another amount (any ?) to the other empty slot ?

Assuming that both slots do Not have to have the same amount in them.  TRUE ?

c.  If 8 in one, and 4 in the other, I would have to discard the 4 to free up its slot ?  TRUE ?

Again, thanks for help; much appreciated.

BTW:  that link to the installation/service manual you sent has about 5 different languages.

Really not very usable (at least for me)

Anything else on how to install Mmory available, that for a Sr. Citizen might be easier ?

Regards, stay well,

Bob

You're very welcome, Bob.

Yes, there are two slots in the PC, each slot can take up to a 16 GB memory module.

Yours has an 8 GB chip in one slot and a 4 GB chip in the other one.

You would need to remove the 4 GB chip to add a memory chip of a larger capacity.

Both slots do not have to have the same capacity, but if you install the memory in matching capacities (add a second 8 GB chip after removing the 4 GB chip), the memory will run in the higher performing dual channel mode.

Right now with 8 + 4, the memory is running in the lower performing single channel mode.

Installing...make sure you shut down, and unplug the PC before working inside of it, and make sure you lock that memory chip in the slot real good.  It may take a decent amount of force to lock it in.

Hi Paul,

I apologize if I'm taking advantage of your time and help.

Really nice of you to do so, and sincerely appreciated.

Have found this one: Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR x8 DIMM 288-Pin Memory -

                                        CT16G4DFD8266

Am thinking to leave the present 8 GB in place, and dump the present 4 GB.

Would use the "old" 4 GB slot for this new single 16 GB Moule, (from Amazon) which would then give him 24 GB total.

Hopefully, he could then run the new MS Flight Sim., which will not run at all on his present 12 GB.

a.  Does the above make sense ?

b. Could you verify that the 16 Crucial module noted above will fit on his HP Pavilion Desktop ?

(If not, might you select for me (Amazon, Crucial, PNY, etc.) a Single 16 GB one that would)

Best regards, and thanks again,

Bob

You're very welcome, Bob:

We're here to help, and I will continue to do so unless you ask a question for which I don't have an answer.

Yes, this 16 GB module is the one you want...CT16G4DFD8266

https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct16g4dfd8266/ct12475838

...and yes, you can remove the 4 GB chip, add it to the 8 GB chip and have 24 GB of total memory running in single channel mode.

You could google the part number and see if you can get it for a little less on Amazon for example.

I see that Amazon sells the same part number for almost $13 less than buying direct from Crucial.
