Pavilion p7-1154
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

In search of advice on adding 4GB of ram to my machine. This PC is a bit long in the tooth: HP pavilion p7-1154 AMD quad-core A6-3600, 6GB DDR3 system memory, AMD Radeon HD 6530D integrated graphics, 1 terabyte hard drive.

1) Will this memory stick work? A-Tech 4GB DDR3 1333MHz DIMM PC3-10600 UDIMM Non-ECC CL9 240-Pin. It appears to meet the requirements.

2) Do I stick this in the blue or the black slot? I saw someone's comment in another thread (closed) that said he "prefer[s] to match sets with the highest density in the first slot of each channel. I believe my current memory is set up like this: Samsung M378B5773CH0-CH9 - 2GB and  Micron 16JTF51264AZ-1G4D1 4gm for a total of 6GB.

3) Finally, should I expect much improvement in general desktop performance by increasing the RAM from 6 GB to 10 GB? Should I add another 2-4 GB of RAM?

@Aggiememnon , welcome to the Community.

I will combine all three of your questions by stating that it is best to add memory in matching pairs.  The motherboard has Dual channel memory architecture.  The matching pairs will give you the best performance.  Here is the Product Specifications page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-p7-1100-desktop-pc-series/5146449/model/5157025/doc...

If you look at the section titled "Memory/Memory upgrade information" you will see this information.  Since you are dealing with an older computer, I suggest that you consider buying Crucial Memory.  If they recommend their memory it is guaranteed to work.

Here is the memory that is recommended for your computer by Crucial Memory: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/pavilion-p7-1154

You will no doubt have to replace the current memory.  If you have questions about their memory, you can contact their Tech Support.  They have always been very helpful.

You may want to consider adding a SSD as the boot drive.  You can look at the SSD's that they recommend for your computer in the section titled "SSD" next to the section titled DRAM.  Here is a HP Knowledge Base article that will explain the best way to make the transition from your Hard Drive Disk (HDD) to a SSD: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Knowledge-Base/Upgrading-Desktop-or-Laptop-to-a-SSD/ta-p/73048...

There 1 TB SSD is on sale for $99.  This is a great deal.  The SSD will speed up the boot process and all of the other functions that you perform.  It is the least expensive way to add new life to a computer.  With 16 GB of memory and the SSD you would see considerable system performance increase.

If you have further questions, I will be glad to answer them.

Thank you for the thorough and comprehensive response! I'll take your advice and replace the current memory with matching pairs to get to 16 GB.

I'll look into getting the SSD drive. This seems like a good purchase, especially if this is an actual piece I can take this with me if/when I build a better computer.

You are welcome, @Aggiememnon !

Yes, you can use the drive in another computer.  I actually use one of my older SSD's with a USB adapter for financial data: https://www.startech.com/en-us/hdd/usb3s2sat3cb.

Good luck!

@old_geekster,  Thanks again for the SSD suggestion. I was able to clone, install, and use the old 1TB HDD drive for storage. Making the switch to booting from the SSD drive has made a HUGE difference. Probably don't even need the extra ram, but I'll install it anyway when it gets here. Excited to use my computer again. I find it very satisfying to make these small "upgrades" and see some improved results!

After adding the ram, I'll add a TV tuner card and hook it up to my outdoor antenna for homemade DVR fun, now that I got oodles of hard disk space.

You are welcome, @Aggiememnon!

I am glad that you are enjoying your new computer.  I have said for years that adding a SSD boot drive is like adding new life to your computer.  I agree that the new memory will actually be the icing on the cake.  I doubt that you will see as much improvement as you have with the SSD, however.

Good luck!!
