OMEN 30L Desktop PC GT13-1000a (207P7AV)

I would like to upgrade my 5600g with current hardware/motherboard already installed.  What are my upgrade options if possible to simply swap out the CPU.

@shawnhut,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

Your OMEN 30L Desktop PC GT13-1000a (207P7AV) as fitted with a Hana motherboard (SSID: 8876), can be upgraded up to a Ryzen 9 5900X (3.70 GHz up to 4.80 GHz, 12-Cores, 24-Threads) :

A Ryzen 9 5900X can be purchased online starting at around $200, such as via this eBay Seller: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X (12C/24T) 3.7Gz AM4 "Vermeer" Desktop CPU Processor | eBay.

If I decide to upgrade - Once I install the new cpu, will the PC recognize it or will I have to do something in the BIOS?

HP Recommended

@shawnhut,

Yes, your PC should recognize it without any issues -please be aware that the first time you boot up your PC, your system may appear to be unresponsive for a minute or so, be patient as your system may take some time to sort things out.

Also, please be aware that a Ryzen 9 5900X requires a discrete graphics card, as it does not have integrated graphics.

Will I have to place thermal paste on the new cpu?  I purchased a Ryzen 9 5900x.

HP Recommended

@shawnhut,

Yes, whenever you change out a processor, you always apply good quality fresh thermal paste such as Arctic MX-4.

Personally, I prefer the spread-out / "Buttered Toast" method, but if you are lacking experience, use the "X" aka "cross" application.  You can see a video on the cons and pros here: Best Way to Apply Thermal Paste? Does it Even Matter? (youtube.com).

Remember: don't put on too little thermal paste.

I am now getting a cpu fan error 90b.  I don’t see any dirt on the fan but  I cleaned it

anyways.

Quick update…receiving 90b fan error but fan is working.  No idea at this point.

@shawnhut,

The "90b" fan error could pertain to your CPU or chassis fan.  If you can, switch them around and/or try an alternative cooling fan to troubleshoot.

Make sure you got cooling fans connected to these 4-pin PWM cooling fan connectors, specifically the "F_FAN1" connector:

It is the 5900x causing the 90b error message.  I swapped out with the original 5600g and cpu fan is fine (does not spin on turbo).  Is there a way to fix it in bios?  Regardless I checked the cpu temperature with the 5900x and it is fine while running applications.
