HP Compaq 8100 Elite Mid Tower Base
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have the HP 8100 Elite with a dual core i5 Inside.   I am doing a big upgrade to it because parts for it are very cheap now and I am looking to make  a little lower end gaming PC for my fiance.   Out of all the processors Ive found the fastest and most cost effective CPU is an Intel Xeon x3460.   I am curious if the motherboard will reject it given the fact its maximum ram is 32gb whereas the i5 only accepts 16gb.  Everything else is the same,  It supports ram up to 1333mhz as well as being a 95w cpu.

Will the motherboard accept the new CPU?

Well after some testing I updated the bios to the latest version and installed a graphics card. No errors the motherboard recognized the CPU right away. Nearly 2.5x performance!! The X3460 does work in this desktop. Although I should have ran some tests with the Graphics card and the old bios to know if you need to update the bios first but unfortunately I did not. The bios is extremely easy to upgrade though.

Hi:

It is highly unlikely a Xeon processor will work.

There would be no microcode for it in the BIOS.

Here is the link to the 8100 Elite quickspecs.

The supported processors can be found on pages 6 and 7.

In order to upgrade to one of the quad core processors listed, you must also install a discrete video card.

The 1st gen quad core processors do not support the onboard Intel HD graphics.

And also the graphics card I used was an EVGA 1060 sc 6gb card. Which also performed well. Although I will be installing a discrete one in the coming weeks as the 1060 goes in my gaming pc.

I'm surprised but glad the processor worked for you.

I came across this thread while searching for any BIOS information on my Elite 8100 AY031AV with the 531990-01 Mobo.

I'm going to edit my reply as I've now found the later versions of BIOS, for some reason HP don't show them if you choose Windows 8 as the OS (I'm actually running 10 on mine but chose 8 for the latest driver versions).

So the tip is, choose a few different OS versions to see if other files change besides drivers.

Older thread, I know, but what BIOS version did you install? 1.13?

I'm running an 8100 with the SFF chassis as a home media server and wanted to upgrade the CPU. It's got the i5-650, and I've been eyeballing the LGA1156 Xeon/i7 CPUs as well.

Thanks.
