Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have been dealing with random shut down problem for several months now. My computer will just randomly shut off with no warning, even when sitting completely idle. I thought it was the power supply, but I found out it's not. I replaced it and it still happens. I ran a test using Speccy and it says my CPU temperature is bouncing between 79 and 88 degrees celsius staying mostly around 79-80. Occasionally it will drop down to 66 and then climb right back up. My fan runs almost all the time. My vents are clean and free from dust. I've been running with the side off to try to allow extra air flow. Appears to help a little, but the problem still exists. My CPU usage typically stays between 6-15% depending on what I'm doing. First, could this be the cause of my random shut downs? Second, if so, how do I keep my cpu from overheating? I'm not doing any heavy duty computing. No games or anything like that. Mostly web browsing and music or video streaming and the occasional Micosoft Office applications. Thank you!

@Wb2001 you're my hero!! I've been trying to resolve this for more about 5 months now and no one has given me a good solution. I cleaned out my cpu fan and the heatsink was all clogged up with solid black gunk. Since I cleaned it my CPU hasn't gone above 53 celsius. It appears to hover around 49-51 whereas before it was staying in the 60's or 70's and even reaching the 80's. The fan isn't on constantly either. Plus, no more shut downs! I got to believe this was my propblem all along. My CUP was just overheating. Speccy seemed to be a good tool for helping me figure this out too. Thank you!!! You saved my computer from becoming a large projectile out the window or a boat anchor.

@NickL1,

Have you cleaned in-between the heatsink fins?

You're referring to the fan over the CPU right? Not deliberately. I did take my compressed air can to the fan and blew it out. But I didn't clean the blades individually or by hand.

@NickL1,

The fan blades need to be clean.  Q-tip and alcohol.

Beneath the fan is a metal heatsink. It does not need to be removed.

You will see vertical metal fins, and the dust gets wedged between the fins.

You need to blow out or pushout the dirt.  I like to use pipe cleaners.
