HP COMPAQ 8300 ÉLITE
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I intend to upgrade my CPU (currently I5 2400) with a more performing one. I would like to know which CPUs are compatible with my motherboard and which procedure to follow. Thanks

Hi:

Below is the link to the HP quickspecs for your PC's model series.

It has the list of supported processors by form factor.

HP Compaq Elite 8300 Business PC (itema-pg.com)

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the processor removal and replacement procedure by form factor...

Thanks for the reply. I have some doubts, BIOS update is not mentioned, is it not necessary?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

It shouldn't be necessary, but if you want to update the BIOS, you should use the F10 setup BIOS flash method to update the BIOS since the BIOS updates were not written to be run using Windows 10.

See this discussion for how to safely update the BIOS to the latest version...the links to the updates can be found on the link I posted within the below discussion.

So you advise me to try to replace the CPU without updating the BIOS.  If that doesn't work, then update the BIOS?  Another question I ask is, in the documentation you sent me the links I saw that in the category of i5 CPUs my current i5 2400 is not mentioned, why?

Thanks

Hi:

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know why the i5-2400 processor your PC has was not included on the list.

I don't believe that a BIOS update is necessary unless you read all of the available release notes to see if support was added for additional processors, and I don't think there was.

I got the following information about my PC via CPU-Z

BIOS K01 V02. 90 DATE 07/16/2013.

CHIPSET SANDY BRIDGE R. 09.

SOUTHBRIDGE Q77 R. 04.

MOTHERBOARD 3396

I have a hypothesis about the presence of an I5 2400 in my PC. As this PC was purchased as refurbished, could the CPU have been replaced by basically downgrading? In fact, I found advertisements on the internet that match the I5 2400 CPU with the HP COMPAQ 8200 ÉLITE model.

Hi:

Yes, either that is possible, or one of the i3-21xx processors were removed and the PC actually upgraded to the i5-2400.

If you enter the serial number of your PC in the box at the link below, it should tell you what processor HP originally installed in your PC.

Thank you very much for the information and help. I went to the link you indicated and I entered the serial number of the PC along with the product number. a list of parts came out but not the CPU. I then tried to enter only the product number and instead came out the list of CPUs that can be mounted on that product.bom.jpgCPU LIST.jpg

You're very welcome.

Well...I guess we will never know what processor HP originally installed in your PC.  ☹️
