I have a Pavilion p7 1226s with a Motherboard part #: 656846-002, Motherboard - Carmel-2, Intel H61, 95W VRM. I currently have an HP Pavilion p7-1226s with an Intel Core i3-2130. It's a 64 bit. Currently using windows 7 possibly upgrading to windows 10 after the CPU upgrade.
What is the best processor supported?
I heard the i7-2600 CPU processor might be the highest supported, but I don't know.
Is there a difference between the i7-2600 and the i7-2600k? If the 2600 is the highest CPU processor, then can the 2600k work in the computer?

I don't think it's necessary to update the BIOS, it's using an HP certified processor.
Anyway to be able to update you must have windows 7 and the BIOS is at the following link

Greetings @candben
Welcome back to the Forum.
This is tough to answer. I can't find HP provided MB specs for your PC.
So it is not possible to check HP recommended CPU upgrade options.
Per Intel, both the 2600 and 2600K are 95 watt TDP CPUs.
HP would have to include BIOS microcode for either CPU. Otherwise the MB will not see either CPU.

Sorry, I checked the system information and found that the following: Base-Board Manufacturer PEGATRON CORPORATION, Base-Board Product 2AC2, Base-Board Version 2.00. The current processor is Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2130 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3400 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s).
I was told it was a 656846-002 mother board carmel2 Intel H61 95W VRM.
I don't know what it is. Are they the same? and if so does the i7-2600k work in it? Are the i7-2600 i7-2600k and i7-2600s the same?

if you see the link I put and translate it to your language you will see that it is the same motherboard, are not the same processors put the K series processor is at your own risk, probably the BIOS does not recognize that type of processor because the microcode was not registered in the BIOS.
- Manufacturer: Pegatron
- Form factor: uATX - 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4 cm (9.6 inches)
- Chipset: Intel H61
- Memory sockets: 2 x DDR3
- Front side bus speeds: 5 GT/s
- Processor socket: LGA 1155

Greetings @candben
I am repeating again; HP has to provide the BIOS microcode to see the 2600K. The factory BIOS does not support the 2600K.
@resistencia shows CPU support up to a 2600, not the 2600K. Both processors are 95 watt TPD components.
It's anybody's guess if a 2600K will run on your HP MB/BIOS.
Try the 2600K if you can return the 2600K to the seller.
