- Can I upgrade CPU to Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE?

The original CPU is the Ryzen 5 Pro 2400GE. Looking at all the specs, the Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE matches up - same AM4 socket, supported by the B350 chipset, 35w, Vega 11 Graphics. Apparently the 2400GE is Zen architecture/Raven Ridge, the 3400GE is Zen+/Picasso. (The motherboard is HP 83E9, but I can find no info on that anywhere,).
Seems it will physically fit, will work with the chipset, but will it work with the BIOS? My BIOS is HP Q26 version 02.14.01 (CPU-Z adds this to the BIOS description: AMD AGESA RavenPI-FP5-AMR 1.1.0B). The SMBIOS is 3.1.
Thanks!

If you are interested in installing W11 on your PC as is, you can read this discussion for how I upgraded several HP and Dell notebook and desktop PC's that did not meet the W11 hardware requirements to W11 22H2/22H3
You have to use the version of the Rufus utility that I zipped up and attached in the discussion (v3.18).

If the in-place upgrade fails, you should be able to clean install W11 using the bootable W11 installation flash drive you made with Rufus.
Easy as pie.

Looking at the processor specs offered in the model series, your PC already has the best processor HP offered in it.
HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Desktop Business PC
The user benchmarking website has insufficient data and only shows a handful of PC's with the supported processors offered in the model series, so there is no data available on any experimentation.

None of the BIOS release notes found under the BIOS Revision History section at the link below add support for newer processors.

In conclusion, I would say that the Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE would not be supported in your PC.
It appears that the Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE was offered in the 705 G5 DM model series.

It would not be in HP"s interest to have the 705 G4's support newer processors, or there would be no reason to buy the G5.
Were you wanting to do that so you can run W11 on your PC?
If so, I have an easy workaround to get W11 to install on your PC.

Yes, running Windows 11 was the primary motivation to upgrade. The performance improvement from the processor, roughly 5-10%, is not significant. If you have a workaround to get W11 to run, that would be good to know.

Thanks! Will look into doing that when convenient.
Still wish it was a processor upgrade, but as best I can tell HP uses the 1st letter of the bios as a naming convention to specify the year. Mine is a 2018 desktop, so bios is Q, 2019 bios (like for the 705 G5 DM 35w that uses the Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE) is R. Was hoping the 705 G5 DM 35w had the same bios, but no joy. The chip, being an APU is 2nd gen ryzen, unlike CPUs where 3XXX indicates 3rd gen, so I was hopeful, but nope.
I really like the tiny form factor PCs (laptop in a tiny box). as they suit my use without taking up space.

You're very welcome.
I got a HP Elitedesk 800 G3 DM 35W PC last June and I too, am impressed with its performance and small size.
Mine just missed the W11 eligibility cut too, and I used the method I gave you to install W11.
Works great. I installed a 1 TB Samsung 980 NVMe SSD since it originally came with a 256 GB 2.5" SATA SSD.
The best processor I could have installed in mine was the i7-7700T

Considering the specifications match up, the Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE seems compatible with your system in terms of socket, chipset, power, and graphics. However, the crucial factor is BIOS compatibility. With your current HP Q26 version 02.14.01 BIOS, which includes AMD AGESA RavenPI-FP5-AMR 1.1.0B, it's likely compatible. To ensure a smooth upgrade, verify if the BIOS supports the new processor. Good luck with the upgrade! 🙂

That is the question, how to verify the BIOS is compatible?
I also need to update my BIOS to the latest for my machine, though when it comes to BIOS and drivers, my experience leans towards "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

It is beyond my knowledge to know BIOS/Chipset interdependency, which is why I asked, and I am pretty hesitant to be the first guinea pig! I did find this article, though: https://www.pcgamer.com/x370-b350-a320-bios-update-ryzen-5000-zen-3/
The graphic seems to indicate the B350 does not need a BIOS update (assuming you have the chipset update to AGESA 1.2.0.7) to use a 3000 series APU like the 3400GE. It would need a BIOS update to use a regular Ryzen 3000 series processor though. So I guess the first order of business would be update my chipset driver and see if it shows to have that AGESA version or newer. I really need my computer to work glitch free for the next month or so, so not ready to do the chipset update at the moment.
Not needing a BIOS update as shown in the article seems consistent with this page showing a BIOS update is needed when using it with a 500 series chipset. https://www.eatyourbytes.com/cpu-detail/amd-ryzen-5-pro-3400ge/
