HP Pavillion a6403w
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello, I was wondering if I could upgrade the RAM in my old HP Pavillion. It currently has 4GB. I would like to go to 8GB because I am turning the old PC into a media server. Could I also upgrade the GPU? I have a GeForce 7100 in the computer right now. Thanks

@Kyle4, welcome to the forum.

Here is the Product Specifications page for the computer.  If you look at the section titled "Memory upgrade information" it tells you which memory is compatible with the motherboard.  It may be difficult to find the memory since the computer was released in 2008.

It is difficult to match newer video cards with older computers.  Your best option is to choose a manufacturer, such as EVGA, and contact their Tech Support for help with choosing the best card for your system.  You will most likely have to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU). also.  It is only 250W and the newer cards require at least 300W to run properly.

My honest opinion is, if you need a faster computer, save your money and buy a new one.  Even with the upgrades that you mentioned you will not see much system performance boost.
