Hello
I have a HP Z6 G4 and am considering upgrading my GPU from Quadro K5000 to a RTX 3090. However, those cards are consuming much energy (around 350 W). The HP technical white paper says that "The HP Z6 G4 depending on system configurations can support up to three 75 W cards, or up to two 180 W cards or one 250 W card."
So my question is : would a RTX 309 work well with the HP Z6 G4 ? Would I need to get a specific cooling device ? Or would I not be able to take the best of the card ?
Is the answer the same for al the RTX 3090 cards, or do I need to find specfic ones ? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
According to the specs, your HP Z6 G4 Workstation is powered by a 1000-watt power supply (please verify), which is plenty to power an RTX 3090. And yes, your Workstation is very much compatible with an RTX 3090 as this HP Z6 G4 Workstation User shows: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/59537696.
Getting back at your 1000-watt power supply, it is equipped with two PCIe power cables, each capable to deliver 12V x 18A = 216-watt of power each:
What I am not sure about is whether these PCIe power cables are 6-pin or 6+2-pin power cables.
If they are 6-pin PCIe power cables, you can use 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe power adapter cables and then using a dual 8-pin PCIe to 16-pin (12+4) or 12-pin PCIe power adapter cable if necessary.
I haven't seen much online regarding having to consider installing a special cooling solution for an RTX 3090. I would say, try it out, and if it is the case that the RTX 3090 temps become a concern, return and ask for solutions.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,
