Hi there @harrybatt,
May the Forums be with you! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you are looking or some help with upgrade options for the system you have. I am happy to help with this.
BAsed on the modl you gave, I think a good guide would be HP TouchSmart 420-1000t Product Specifications and Configurable Options, and HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, IPISB-NK (LavacaB) which show the options at purchase, which would be the supported options.
Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.
I work on behalf of HP
