Compatible video cards for an HP Slimline s5503w

Hello,

I would like to know what sorts of video cards would be compatible with my old HP Pavilion Slimline s5503w.  According to the specifications page, the stock setup is integrated graphics using nVidia GeForce 6150SE.  Currently, this has been failing me, so I need to switch.  Now, the specification page also lists that there is an optional PCI Express X16 slot for graphics.  That said, I have never shopped for video cards, so I am wondering if there is anything I specifically need to look for, such as memory, brand, etc.?  I do know that I want to stay away from nVidia, if possible.

Hi:

You would be limited to legacy low power, low profile graphics cards, and you have limited your options to AMD cards.

If you just want something that will work and is cheap, I recommend a Dell Radeon HD 2400 Pro graphics card.

You can find them in used but tested and working condition on eBay,'

That is the card I used in older PC's.   Your monitor will need to have a DVI port.

One like this with the low profile mounting bracket.

I see, so I am guessing that means that a Dell Radeon HD 2400 Pro graphics card would be less capable, video-output-wise, than my current integrated nVidia GeForce 6150SE?  I was actually kind of hoping for something that would perform a little better than the stock nVidia or at least be near-equivalent.

However, if I am just limited to something lower in performance but still works well without causing my OS to crash, then I may go for it at this point. 

Oh, also, my old monitor is DVI only, so that part shouldn't be an issue.

Actually, I think the Radeon HD 2400 would be a better performing card than the onboard Nvidia 6150.

It's newer, and has more dedicated video memory.

If you want a better and newer performing card, you could try the AMD Radeon HD 6450, but it will cost considerably more new, and I am not 100% sure it will work.  I'm pretty sure but not 100% sure.

Personally, your PC is very outdated, and I would put the least amount of money in it as possible.

These higher-performance Radeon 6450 cards may be something for me consider in the future, though I am not sure if would risk a purchase if it wasn't compatible at this.  For now I am just trying to keep my outdated computer functioning well for schoolwork.  Spending the least possible is indeed my strategy.

Considering all this, I think I am just going to go with the Radeon HD 2400.
