HP Pavilion 595-p0084
Microsoft Windows 11

I haven't used the DVD/CD rom drive on my desktop until now. The device manager says its there (hp PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH) along with the most up-to-date driver. I've done everything including uninstalling the device to all the little tricks found on the web....but still no satisfaction. It doesn't seem to want to recognize the disk. I love this computer but it sure would be nice to play a cd. Please advise - thank you

you have this computer, check what is indicated for the cd dvd supported by the cd/dvd player

I told you before, try different cds/dvds, so only a few work, right?
You need 1 cd and  1 dvd, brand new, compatible with what is indicated!
try the directions here

CD/DVD drive cannot read discs in Windows 10

CD/DVD drive is not detected (Windows 10)

CD or DVD drive cannot burn discs

if it doesn't work drop it, and contact the reseller, or HP support

@BinderWalker -- a CD/DVD relies on having a laser that shoots at the media, and a sensor that receive the reflection of the laser from the surface of the media.  If that laser has failed, you need to replace the CD/DVD device.

Also, try this: insert some media, noting the orientation of the writing on the label.

Close the tray.

Do you hear any noise as the media spins?

Do you feel any vibration as the media spins?

Open the tray.

Is the media still at the same orientation, indicating the the media has NOT spun at all?

If so, the motor that spins the media has failed. Replace the device.

I've tried a cd and a couple of dvd's. I was able to see the jpegs off the cd but neither dvd would open. Upon closing the door, I get 3 beeps and maybe 15 seconds of the spinning sound, then nothing. It stops.

I'm not ready to accept a bad driver...Its never been used and I recently purchased this pc. I suppose it could be defective?

HP Recommended

@BinderWalker -- since you purchased the PC within the last 12 months, contact HP Support, to open a "case" (as HP calls it) to exercise the HP Warranty. HP will repair/replace your computer (or just the device), at HP's expense.

By "opening", do you mean that Windows tries to open some app, for that app to try to process the files, but that app is failing to open?

Within Windows File Manager, right-mouse-button click on the icon for the CD/DVD device.

You have the option to "open" it, as you would "open" a USB memory-stick, to view the files/folders stored on the media, rather than trying to "launch" some application to process the content.  Does this type of "open" display the icons for files/folders?

> it sure would be nice to play a CD.

If you insert a commercially-produced music CD, does Windows automatically use Windows Media Player to play all the tracks, or is there some "failure", or "error-message" ?
Or, if you launch Windows Media Player, and then insert the music CD, does W.M.P. recognize the media, and access the Internet to show you the album-art, and the names of each track of music?

Sorry - poor choice of words. I wasn't trying to use an app to open the disc files so I could read / use them, I was merely trying to allow the rom to do it's job.

Opening the rom as you suggested (located on my E drive) brings up a drop down: You need to format the disc in drive E before you can use it. Do you want to format it? > start > WARNING: Formatting will erase ALL data on this disc. To format the disc, click OK, to quit, click CANCEL.

This is the message regardless of what disc I apply.

HP Recommended

@BinderWalker -- You need to format the disc in drive E before you can use it. Do you want to format it?

Windows is reporting that no data is being returned by the CD/DVD drive. Also, you cannot "format" existing read-only CD/DVD media, such as a retail-purchased music CD or video DVD.

As I previously wrote, exercise the HP warranty to replace this broken device, at HP's expense.
